In the Golf GTI Edition 30 pdf brochure it states the following Thanks to the knock control, unleaded four star (at least 95 RON) can be used instead of unleaded super plus. In order to achieve maximum fuel consumption benefits on the FSI engine, ultra low sulphur petrol must be used’ Since picking up the car, I’ve paid top whack and filled it up with super (BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power). Am I wasting my money filling it up with super? I would save a lot of money if I just put in bulk standard unleaded. From what I can tell, VW say that it’ll be ok. Do we really get any benefit from using the higher octane fuel? I’ve read that very few engines require 98 RON and the market for super fuels is based on people thinking that if they fill up with super, performance is better and they get better mpg (as claimed by the petrol companies). clown Posted March 22, 2007 Report Share Posted March 22, 2007 It states the higher fuel,and shows the larger 98 in your fuel cap,with the 95 in smaller text.I put in both, if i`m going on a longer journey I use the 95,I then put the 98 in every other tank.Dont use supermarket 95 only the 97-99 octane.These engines as proven on `Fifth Gear` do not show a massive increase in performance with the higher octane fuels,I think from memory it was a max of 5bhp,your not going to notice this small increase,on the larger engines BMW M3 and the Evo`s there was a noticable gain. Snoopy Posted March 22, 2007 Report Share Posted March 22, 2007 I regular drive two mk5 GTIS (not an Ed30) and one now runs 99% of the time on normal unleaded the other on optimax and i really cannot tell the difference when getting out of one into the other. Tarmac_Terrorist Posted March 22, 2007 Report Share Posted March 22, 2007 Can't really comment on the performance on the GTI as I've always used Shell Optimax in mine and it's only a weekend car. However, I generally cover about 500 miles per week and can confidently confirm that on other makes and models of cars (company cars & long term hire cars)I have always managed to eek a further 10% mpg by using Optimax. This pays for itself in terms of the initial purchase price. I also 'think' I can confirm that I gain improved performance - not saying it's quicker, but definitely pulls better under load eg low gears roundabouts etc Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
aceplumbers Posted March 22, 2007 Report Share Posted March 22, 2007 it says 98 ron on my fuel cap and i only use shell v power on my cars, i have seen on renaultsports web page that a guy with a 225 megane had a burnt out valve and renault were blaming the wrong fuel grade he was using , they state 98 ron but he was just using normal unleaded , it might have just been renault trying to worm their way out of the situation though Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
