A8 D3 MMI Switch Panel Replacing

Hi

My MMI control panel has had some coffee or coke spilt on it at some point. All of it works ok but the Car and Setup buttons are a little sticky, not a big issue but….. I found a new control panel on e-bay for £30 quid so thought I would give it a go. I have worked out how to get the console panel off (one screw behind the ash tray). It seems like it going to be easy to change the MMI (just a few screws).

However I thought it best to be careful and not to swap it over until I do a few checks, this is were you guys come in! Before I unplug it, I want to know if anyone had done this before and does it cause any problems or any gotchas I should be aware of? Also the part numbers are slightly different and I assume this is because they are from different years of car. I wondered if you needed a newer version of software to make them work as there is a software number on the new one? I don’t know if this is saying, this version of software is installed in the MMI panel of if you need to have this version of software loaded on the car for the panel to work? I have written down all the numbers from the old and new (see below) if you could advice, I will then give it a go (it will keep me out of mischief over the Easter weekend).

Thanks in advance.

Philip

Well I guess no one knows? Well I have done some digging and finger crossing and replaced it with out issue. Very easy DIY job to do in case anybody needs to do it in the future.

I spoke to a couple of Audi dealers and one said "I don't know", the other said "it is just an unplug and plug the new one back in" but did not know what the new part number was as he did not have it listed.

I then spoke to Audi and they said speak to a dealer which I explained I had done, they suggested to try another one in my area. I asked them to phone but they would not (great customer service!). Anyway they were right (well lucky) because the third dealer said yes it would be fine and the part number was just a newer version and it just plugged in with out a software update or being coded to the car.

The only difference I could see between the two switch panels is that the "NET" button is named "NAME".

It took just 30 mins to do and was straight forward. One thing I did notice was that the SW version on the "version" screen on the MMI has changed. I assume this means that the switch panel contains software.

Before it was FC SW: 02254AUFC18K0F46F and now it is FC SW: 03513AUFC78K0F53C. The last four characters is the same number as on the round sticker. I don’t know what this means or if it gives me anything?

One thing in case anyone does it, when you unplug the parking break button it will log an error. You will see this when you start the car. To fix, drive the car, put it in park and apply the parking break, then release it and drive again. This seems to reset the parking break and the error goes.

The telematics/net access function seems to have been dropped (safety?) Instead, a directory function was put in under the NAME button, which was rather dubious in it's first incarnation nearly three years ago, but which seems to be pretty well featured in the later MMI revisions.

Yes in the MMI manual it says that the "NET" is not available. How can you get the MMI software upgraded? Do you have to take it to the dealers and if so do you know how much?

Thanks

Dealers are unlikely to upgrade MMI just because you want it upgrading.

When I had my W12, I got MMI upgraded by finding a few bugs and documenting them with screen shots, printing this out and taking it in. A week later, I got a call to say they could upate the MMI. The bugs I had were things like the nav always saying "first left" on roundabouts (or similar), the DIS display just saying "Audio CD" after startinginstead of the CD name, some wierdness in the display after selecting CD, Setup, Sound, then cancelling with Return, nav intersection zoom not rotating the map to "direction of travel" when zooming in, and the phone book function not reading my SIMs contacts properly (items in phone not in MMI list). Nothing that stopped the car being used, but annoying enough in a £70k car!

You might be able to sweet-talk somebody in your service department?
