p1tse
not required the physics behind it, but i've never been in one and don't know the principles. manual: clutch and manual gearbox auto: select drive, neutral, drive, park DSG: is like an auto, but with option to shift SMG? semi manual? how. can it be stalled, or is it in drive all the time like auto, how are gears selected etc.

mlhj83
Both SMG and DSG are similar in the sense that they are both are automated manuals which means both do not have clutch pedals but they do use clutch plates in their transmission unlike proper automatics (including the ones with the option of manually shifting gears) which use a torque converter in their transmission. So basically, the torque converter in a proper automatic transmission is what sets it apart from a automated manual which uses clutch plates. Essentially, SMG is a manual gear box but the clutch is electronically operated, hence there isn't a clutch pedal. For simplicity sake, DSG is like having 2 SMG gear boxes, one clutch for even gears and another for odd gears, this allows for one of the fastest possible shifting transmission on any road car.
