fenn
don't know if any of you know the answer to this, but I've got a curious occasional problem with my 2,5 tdi- year 2000-6x cylinder engine, runs great, done 90,000, well looked after - but every now and then, and only when warm, it will,on tickover, suddenly emit huge amounts of white smoke from the exhaust-doesn't last for long, and doesn't seem to cause any problems. My garage have checked it over and can't find any obvious problem -all they can think off is a batch of poor grade diesel, but I've filled the tank a couple of times and still get it happening occasionally. I've had two of the 2.5 tdi's before.although they were the previous engine, and never had anything like it-any ideas would be very helpfull - as i say,it doesn't seem to be having any effect on the car,but it's vaguely worrying non the less thanks
cruiser647
When the white smoke appears, do the engine revs drop or rise a bit?
fenn
no-absolutely nothing else happens -the car just gets enveloped in this smoke
nicknick
I'm not a mechanic but I'd bet you that the car is suffering from a blocked crankcase breather. The test is to let the car idle and wait for the smoke to start and then take the oil filler cap off (watch for pressure / heat etc) but if this stops the smoke then you need a new breather. If it is this then it throws no fault codes but will eventually cause the turbo oil seals to fail from the back pressure that builds up in the crankcase. Mine did it at traffic lights - keeping the revs up slightly (presumably opens the EGR valve which helps releave the pressure?) stopped it. The part is not too bad ( £40 I think ) but fitting is a pain as all the injectors need to come off on the V6. I had Audi do mine a year back ( this is apparently very common on this engine (maybe others) at around the 100K mark ) and I think it was close to £300 all in. Hope this helps ... fenn
thanks for that mate-it's booked in to the local stealers for next Tues., so I'll say nothing for half a day, then ring them to see what they say,and then spring this on them if they hanvn't come up with it themselves - on past evidence of work they've done on my S8 they're not particularily good, but they're the only Audi dealer nearby. I'll post the outcome later Thanks again
