R4V_S3 Posted August 20, 2007 Report Share Posted August 20, 2007 I mentioned this in another post about my A/C as i thought the 2 could be related, but i doubt it very much. Also it happened once so was not too bothered. Now it has happened again. When the car is in motion, everything is fine.... when stationary/traffic the temp warning comes on. Coolant level is fine, so i am thinking thermostat? What do you think? Can i get these from GSF? and most importantly... where is the thermostat in the engine bay? and are there 2? s3geezer Posted August 21, 2007 Report Share Posted August 21, 2007 My water pump went on 41k on my S3. The car just overheats really quickly because no water is being circulated. It didn't matter whether it was moving or stationary. Your problem sounds different. If it only does it when stationary it could be the cooling fans/thermostat as when it's moving air is going into thew radiator so no prob. However, if it is your pump, the new aftermarket ones are metal and are more reliable. And as another guy said, get your timing belt done too if you get a new water pump as no extra labour charge is required (well may be a little but not much). R4V_S3 Posted November 3, 2007 Author Report Share Posted November 3, 2007 Ok peeps, I changed the Radiator Fan Switch today, and no joy My fans just do not kick in no matter what. What should i do next do you think? Surely it can't be the water pump as its a problem with my fans.. Should i change the coolant thermostat? Could it be an electrical problem? Thanks for any help. Dallan Posted November 5, 2007 Report Share Posted November 5, 2007 Interesting one this..... no fault code so presumably your EMS light has not come on and stayed on. I'm told this (warning light) would happen if the temp sensor fails (common fault!)... and it has happened to me twice. The sensor is indeed behind the alternator and is fiddly to change and new ones are modified apparently - to prolong their life?? There is an excellent thread buried on the Audi TT section that gives chapter and verse with pictures on how to change this sensor. After i changed the radiator switch on Saturday.. i suddenly thought i could be an elctrical problem. Yesterday i stripped it down again to get access to the rad switch. There i found what looks like a massive junction/relay box. If i by-passed the relay the fan starts running!! Could this be the problem? What does the coolant sensor do? If i'm not mistaken, it does NOT make my fans spin?! As i have said, my only issue is to get the radiator fans to work! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I posted another topic about my A/C not working also, but was advised that the 2 are not related. The part i am talking about is 1J0919506K and is an AUX Fan Module.. R4V_S3 Posted December 4, 2007 Author Report Share Posted December 4, 2007 Guys thank you so much for your assistance.. I just wanted to give you an update. Apparantly the circuit board where the fuses are on the battery had been short-circuiting and needed to be repaired. This has now been done, along with the relay change and a A/C Gas recharge so my car can now stay cool in both ways! Thanks again..
