Thinking of getting a remap for a dsg gti 197bhp

Hi guys,

1st off Im really sorry for poor spelling and grammer and if this info has already been posted.( just finished a night shift and can not sleep)

Over the past few weeks I have been thinking about getting a ed30 just for the extra power , but I can't let the idea of a remap out of my head. I love my car only owning it for 2 years this seems like a good option.

I have ploughed through as many interesting threads on the site ( good work boys & girls) but I am a little confused on the reliability ( Dv issue) and other problems I have read.

My first thought was to get a blu fin device or superchips remap ( both from superchips I prefered the idea of the blu fin over the straight remap from superchips as more benifits are included with the hand held device @ £599 same price for both options giving you a total of 240ps) Having read even more threads on other sites more people seem to having snags with DSG and delayed gear changes can anybody shed some light on this.

I did call the guys @ blufin with the question " if I bought the blufin for my gti then wanted to change my car would I be able to take the blufin with me? His answer was yes as long as the car you buy can take the blufin, & you revert your car back to stock then send the device back in for a reprogram all free if done in the 1st 12 months of owning it. £299 if done after 12 months.

I live in Plymouth and have a superchips guy here in plymouth.

My second thought is getting a revo from a company in Exeter.

255ps £499 straight remap no device ( optional ) I like the idea of the free 5 hour trial, more people seem to have the revo and are v happy.

Has anybody had the same thoughts or can anybody give me their experience on either.

Thanks again guys.

Hi there - I have a 200 DSG and bought a blue fin - I've had no probs - I was honest and my insurer and it went up from about £370 to £580 but reckons it's worth it. The power delivery is more instant - not that it's too agressive I guess it just feels more responsive - at overtaking speeds 50Mph + there's notably more shuff and it squirts out of corners better - I had a Scobbie WRXL with a PPP 265Bhp and it feels pretty much as quick as it at overtaking speeds. My economy is much the same when I'm easy on the juice - if anything it's better. All round I'm happy - Superchips were great to deal with also.

Ah the the best

Hi twopipes,

You shouldn't have any problems with either Bluefin, APR, or Revo regarding DSG. They've all been designed for and tested on DSG cars. A DSG car needs to have the torque limited - Usually to about 300 ft lb. I don't know specific case details but imo I doubt that any remap has caused a DSG problem - The tuners can't afford to have products fail in that respect and the better tuners like Revo do very extensive testing.

Regarding DV, there have been many cases of stock failure on both standard and remapped cars and this is probably why VAG have moved the DV location on current production cars. However, failures are still being reported in the new frontal position. It's a known weak link and a Forge DV is a very robust aftermarket replacement.

Hi twopipes,

my car has done a few delayed gear changes recently having been remapped by APS 10k miles ago. What happens is that when I paddle down 2 gears in manual mode, the gearbox "appears" to drop out of whatever gear I was in then sit in a sort of neutral mode for 3-4 seconds then find the gear that was selected. I took it to my local dealer who supplied the car and left it with them for a few days whilst I was working away. On return, having been driven by 4 different techies and had the diagnostics run, they could not trace any faults or reproduce the symptoms.I told them they were unlikely to reproduce it as it only happens once every couple of weeks and I drive 1500-2000 miles a month. They have booked me in with their "master technician" for him to do more in depth analysis so I will await the outcome of that. I would be interested if you could advise where you got your info from (other forums etc) as I would like to ascertain the extent of this issue to make it less likely that VW will not do anything. At the moment they are saying they cannot change anything without either a fault code or them directly witnessing the fault.

cheers..........Nige 169144-ok.gif

I wonder if the issue mentioned is the same as mine, again it happens very rarely but I noticed it again this morning, dropped into 2nd gear to accelerate and the car just sat there, only for a second or so but it just didn't want to accelerate at all. Then normal business was resumed and I away i went.

It didn't seem like turbo lag as it was longer and there really didn't seem to be anything there, perhaps I caught the gear selector unawares!

Even my unchipped DSG GTi does this very occasionally. Slowing down for a roundabout or T Junction, find a gap, accelerate and the DSG just is'nt in the right gear or is still just making it's mind up - result is a jerky change down after about a 1 second delay. confused.gif

I haven't currently got a remap on my car but like yourself, I have read all the threads detailing the pro's & cons as I might go for one when my car has covered a few more miles / 2 years old.

Personally, I would go for the Revo with the controller to switch the map off / immobilise the car if required. I like the idea of taking my car to a specialist who will upload the map and test thoroughly to make sure everything is working fine with no fault codes etc. I just don't fancy the idea of a standard program being sent for me to upload and hope all is OK - particularly if the car is in warranty.

I believe revo look at the stats on a laptop whilst you take the car for a drive after the map has been uploaded. I guess being the cautious type, that's the kind of reassurance I need. grin.gif

....I know that the DSG shouldn't do what you are describing (mine hasn't done so when either stock or remapped) but surely it's much better driving practice to override D-mode and use either the paddles or floor stick going into roundabouts or T-junctions. I would never now (since driver training) stay in D for a roundabout.

As an aside but on topic, I find the DSG all much smoother since remapping.

  • 7 months later...

Well it's been a while but last week I rang my local Superchips agent Alan Jeffery here in Plymouth. I went in with a question about bluefin and my Mac, ( I already knew the answer) but they kindly offered to fit it for me offering a rolling road before & after as well.

They ordered the device which arrived the next day.

The guy's did have a problem getting the true reading from the rolling road as it's a DSG?

Apparently it keeps changing gears making it hard to get the result?

After a few attempts I was told my GTI was only putting out 192 BHP.....

This did surprise me as I always use v max shell, oh well now is a good time to remap.

I didn't get to use the car for over a week as my wife had taken the car to Bristol on business. On her return she did notice it was quicker but only after I mentioned it.

Yesterday I got the car on my own, At first I was very disappointed. Although the car was very smooth in D mode it would fly through the gears and settle down in 6th gear which was great for mellow economical drives. Today the car averaged 36mpg when normally I would expect 28 - 29 mpg in Cornwall's back lanes.

Having said that in Manual mode it is great, loads of torque a completely different animal . I can only think that when the new map was installed the car had got use to my wife's steady driving.

I really enjoyed the DSG paddles today maybe I will start to use them more.

I'll be giving it a right good going through in the next few weeks so we can both get reacquainted it does feel like a new car. I think it will be staying with me for another 12 - 16 months until VW are accepting orders on the new GTi or the S3 drops a little more in price.

any thoughts on DSG an rolling road would be interesting.

....I constantly use the paddles now - I never used them for the first 20,000 miles!! I used to only use D and then pop into S for overtakes or the twisties. Now I don't use S and only pop into D for urban or traffic jam crawls.

With a remap, using M with paddles is making much better use of the performance and you can control the revs and be better able to slow or accelerate using the gears.

I used to think the paddles were too small and plasticky but they are very tactile and have never let me down. The other bonus is being able to keep both hands on the wheel.

....IF you do go for a remap, JKM Portsmouth aren't too far from you. They now do Bluefin as well as Revo (but methinks they prefer Revo :secret:). Jim (the boss) will be the one rolling roading it and will also take out your car afterwards with his laptop. He cares genuinely about all his work - It's a small family business and sister Kate is always extremely helpful too. I can't recommend them highly enough! I go to him for all my performance mods now. Revo consider him to be one of their best agents. Jim is very honest and will tell you if he thinks you don't need something. They're all enthusiasts and JKM keep a Mk2 for their staff to enjoy trackdays.

Feel free to mention my name - Robin with the red Mk5 GTI, plate VW05 RED.
