The 3.0TDI is quite a bit cheaper than the 4.2TDI and used wise there is a much bigger choice plus the car tax is half that of the 4.2TDI (well after next March). So will a 3.0TDI with Bluefin or something be as quick as the stock 4.2TDI or am I kidding myself?

Thanks

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep you are. 4.2 Stock will cream any 3.0 TDI chipped motor.

audijohn is yer man. He went from a chipped (I think) 3.0TDI to a 4.2TDI. 169144-ok.gif

I would have thought you still wouldn't get close to the torque of the 4.2, and I'm not sure how much more economical it would be.

Yep I did have both chipped and both new, 4.2 TDI eats 3.0 in any form. 169144-ok.gif

Well I never drove the 3.0TDi, but the 4.2TDi is stunning.

I was looking at the 3.0TDi but I figured the residual value of the 4.2 will be far better as there is not many about 169144-ok.gif

Well I hope so yelrotflmao.gif

Lee you bought the best of the TDI cars on the planet mate. beerchug.gif The only step up is the V12 TDI when it comes to the A8

Thanks for the help. The 4.2TDI would be the best bet new and anyway my spec would be too hard to find used. After the typical large A8 discount I'm in the £54/55k bracket so I'd have to keep it a while to ride the depreciation curve.

With the latter in mind, anyone know when the new A8 arrives in the UK (not the recent facelift one)?

I know that they are very different but how does a chipped 4.2TDI compare with an RS4 (apart from double the range on a tank)?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well my RS4 is the fastest and best handling four seater car I have owned, that includes a tuned 5.4 GTS porsche.

So for every day driving the 4.2TDI A8 would be the best car, if you can find somewhere to park the car (it is large)and you need a large economical saloon.

I found the boot in the RS to be more useable as it is deaper than the A8 and a good shape for cases, also the rear seats fold down in the RS, they DON'T in the 8, the RS also seats 4/5 with relative ease as does the 8 but the RS is two feet shorter.

So down to size and economy.

Yes the RS is uneconomical (24-27 MPG for me) but that's the only down side. I have seen 39MPG on the 4.2TDI at motorway speeds and regularly not a one off.But not in the 3.0 TDI that gave me 35MPG best.

Your choice 169144-ok.gif

Have had a petrol 4.2 D3 A8, have a B6 S4 Avant which I am keeping. Really miss the A8 and am looking for something sensible to swap next month's E92 M3 into once I've got bored of taking the revs round to 8500.

Am also thinking about a 550 (BMW not Fezza). Was thinking about a 335 but the run flats on my 645 have driven me mad - pretty dangerous going over bumps etc in the wet. Thanks for the thoughts.

PS Any idea what the 0-100mph time of a 4.2TDI A8 is? They claim 5.9s to 100kmh.

0-100 around 14.6/15 secs.

550i BMW will be very close to your 645i in performance.

I think the 5 series will be close on interior size to the A8, the A8 outside is very large to park in say supermarkets.

It really depends on your needs, or is it bordom with what you have now?.

Why are you swapping a car (M3) that you have not driven/owned yet!!

I could live with the M3 if I had not owned the RS4, put a flappy box on the M3 or RS and it would make them a quicker Car, the RS6 up and coming is so over priced it's way past what I am going to pay for one, you need to drive the new Merc C 63 AMG, that could be a real handfull. FIREdevil.gif

We all swap for bordom really. There's a good deal on an M5 locally but I've never driven SMG and would prefer it to have come along after I'd had the M3 a few months.

I don't mind the size of the A8 as I'm gravitating to larger cars these days, largely for the greater range on a tank that they have. Th3 M3 could be fun but I'll be filling up every few days!

I found the new M3 (if not hammered) was quite economical. 169144-ok.gif

The trouble is I'm bored with it already and I've not even got it. I know this sounds strange but the build up has been so long that I mentall feel I've already owned it a while.

I can get a lightly used M5 for the price of my M3. Now I've never wanted an M5 until very recently so perversely that must be the car for me.

PS I get ten out of ten for lack of logic.
