A4 1.9Tdi quattro sport avant - mini review

21 posts in this topic

Since i am thinking of going back into the company car scheme, I arranged to have an A4 avant for this weekend. beerchug.gif

These are my thoughts after covering 400 miles tongue.gif on a variety of roads, and weather.

I couldn't believe a DIS isn't standard rocketwhore.gif, it took me ages fiddling around trying to work out how to "cycle" the DIS through from the miles to go reading on the dash until I realised!

The seats were comfy and supportive, and the usual audi build quality was evident inside beerchug.gif, although on the outside I noticed part of the chrome strip was coming away confused.gif!

The rear seats did seem a bit cramped though, and due to the transmission tunnel going through the middle of it, and it would be a real squeeze for 3 people in the back. dung.gif

The best thing about this car (came with the sport bumper extensions & skirts) was its looks. grin.gif The silvery blue paint job was excellent, and the roof rails seemed to add something to the car rather than taking anything away!

The handling was great with the sports suspension taking everything i threw at it in its stride, although i did feel a little tramlining on poor road surfaces. I had forgotten what liberties one can take with the quattro system, but seeing as the damned thing was so underpowered I don't think it warranted quattro to be honest. dung.gif

The performance of this car is awful dung.gifdung.gif, much, much worse than my Golf (I even switched my golf back to std to do a back to back comparison). Sure there was some torque but no way near as much as the Golf, and accleration was sluggish. Once up to speed it maintained speed well, but seemed to guzzle fuel. dung.gif

Doing the pilgrimage back to my parents house in the Golf there and back (320 miles) I'll average about 43mpg. In the Audi 36mpg!!

I was hoping the Audi was going to be so good that I could just forget about test driving some other cars, but unfortunately I can't live with it.

The thing that really pissed me off the most was the positioning of the central console. My knee kept rubbing on it to the point that after a 2 hr drive it was bloody sore!!

Sorry audi, I don't think the A4 avant is for me sportifs2.gif

Thanks for the writeup Dansky, interesting, however slightly dissapointing... sure you feel the same! crazy.gif

However, before you go astray, have you considered a 2.5TDI without Quattro? It costs €2300 (aprox 1600 GBP) extra here over the 1.9 TDI Quattro. That way you'll lose the tunnel you hate so much and have some extra power...

Just a thought... wink.gif

I've got the same car that you tested and found under powered. I must admit that I do agree with you regarding the car not needing the 4 wheel drive and the fuel consumption is nowhere near as good as the Golf's.

I was getting about 42MPG average, now I'm getting 36MPG average but now has 190bhp.

I would rather have the extra grunt than the better fuel consupmtion but the car is now how it should have come out of the factory.

130bhp is nowhere near powerful enough thesedays.

I've only driven the 1.9TDi front wheel drive and the 2.5Tdi quattro but my experience is tha these two feel very similar performance wise, this means you're dropping 50bhp ish (?) just for pleasure of a bit more traction. Oh, and I always got over 40mpg, even thashing the bolox off it.

This is what I've been toying with. The wife's next car is probably going to be an A6. I was going to go for the 2.5 Quattro Sport. but if the quattro system knocks 50bhp off the performance then I might as well get a chipped pd130 rather than the FWD 2.5 tdi.

Thoughts?

What can chipping the 2.5 get you to, 180bhp?

Using the PD130, you can acheive the same levels but at a much lower weight.

So if you start off with the 2.5 (180bhp) chipping that gets you to about 200, but the quattro penalty would mean less performance than the chipped PD130. Or would it?

Does that make sense?

What does a chipped 1.9Tdi quattro drive like? Any ideas?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, I don't mind as much not driving the R32 now as I did before the A4 was chipped. The one main drawback is the lack of a decent soundtrack.

But what price do you pay for that V6 sound.

<ul type="square"> [*]It will be heavier [*]It will be less economical [*]It is more expensive to buy [*]And probably not as quick as a chipped/remapped 1.9

Fecking expensive allright, they are only £2k more but the emissions are 40g C02/mile more, which equates to a net increase in tax bill of £100 per month!

Reckon I might get the 1.9Tdi (test driving FWD version next weekend), and remap grin.gif

The 100's have different a different; head, fuel pump, fuel injectors, turbo, manifold and a few other bits to the 130's.

I reckon most of the reliable tuning companys should be able to sort you out some new software.

Try clicking on the revo banner at the top of this site, or AmD

As I mentioned in another thread - my brother-in-law is about to purchase an A6 130 TDi Sport and may think of getting it chipped or buying a plug-in upgrade. I have run a TuningBox on my 530d and the 330d I had before it. What's the best one for the 130 VAG engine? What sort of gains? and how much? Thanks in advance.

Max is about 190bhp and some are getting over 300ft lbs of torque. He'll need it, I thought my A4 130 was under powered, I can't imagine what the 1.9tdi 130 in the A6 is like shocked.gif

I had mine remapped by AmD and I've been pleased by the results pulling 190bhp/295ft lbs and cost something like £700. Their website is AmD

Looks like they have bought their price down to £450 + Vat. The oneclick should be available soon as well.

Well i drove A4 130 a few days ago and it seemed to me thats a god engine! Its not so slow like you are talking!"2.0 tdi in the new A3 is a little bit better but the diference is not that big only when engine runs over 3000(2.0 - 16V) and 2.0 is more quiet...Yester day i drove with my friend on the test drive the car i am going to buy(A4 2.5 TDI) and i am impressed.it tooks 10l/100km and sounds that way that i turned off symphony with BOSE smile.gifI didnt pull it to the limits but my friend did and i felt its going wery wery good!so i dont get it-none of them is slow exept 100 1.9!what do you all think is it smart to buy 2.5 or wait facelift and 2.0 witch will be much cheaper!
