  1. Hi all, I've recently purchased a Passat, and I was looking to upgrade my (standard) stereo. Has anyone got any recommendations for a decent (ideally MP3) stereo that will blend into the existing layout? Also, is it possible to buy one that fits into the double stereo space (i.e the radio slot and the single cd player slot). Was looking to spend 200-300 but could be flexible?
  2. yeah possibly suspicious. I'm not entirely sure whether he was reporting steering issues before or after the repair. It does seem unlikely that the guy would not have got the problem fixed in the 18 months since he had the accident, especially since it was a lease car so it would have been free. As I say, it's also been through two VW Services and MOTs since then
  3. Thought I'd give the latest update. Initial thoughts from VW garage were that I'd bought a "dodgy" car which had a bent chassis. However, they've now done a full test (wasn't called a T-VAC, but some other acronym) which they charged me £160 for, but the car came back as within the normal range (although they did say they did some minor re-allignment, probably to justify the test in the first place). However the car still has the same problem. I've have now authorised them to do an additional hour's investigation at £70 +VAT (which they can't do til monday apparantly) but i think will concentrate around the steering and the suspension. Hopefully thats enough time for them to find the problem. Also did some investigation into the cars history (At the garages request). Apparantly it did have a minor bump 18 months ago which had caused steering problems but has not had any problems since that was fixed and has gone through 2 services and MOTs (and 30k miles) since, so I'm not sure where the car has picked up the problem, but it appears to have occured after the car had finished its lease arrangement (in the last 30 days) Hopefully the garage can diagnose the problem quickly, and get it fixed (and cheaply) as I still don't like the unknown!
  4. thanks for the suggestion. anybody have an idea how much this sort of work costs at a dealership, as i usually use local garages, but sounds like i might need some specialised knowledge here?
  5. Took it to the garage today, and they checked all the obvious components and they seemed to be fine. I got a call this afternoon to say it was fixed, and that I have two different types of tyre on the front wheels. They have now switched the front tyres with the backs. HOWEVER, I've just tried driving it and the problem still is there (it makes you feel sea sick driving after a while). I'm more and more sure that problem is caused by the car moving to the left every time it hits even the slightest bump in the road. Maybe a problem with the shock absorbers (although the garage had a quick external look at them and they looked okay). Back to the garage tomorrow I guess.....
  6. Hi all, Just bought my first VW Passat at auction (1.9 TDI 130bhp, 52 plate for £5900). On driving it home I found my steering is all over the place - everytime I hit even the slightest bump in the road the car wants to dive to the left. I obviously hold it straight resulting in a kind of swaying from left to right constantly. It feels very unstable as though a wheel is loose, although that does not appear to be the case (on later inspection) Strangely one of the reasons I bought the car was that it had just had its 70k VW service (at a VW garage) and MOT 4 weeks ago, so I was surprised to find this problem. I'll book it into the garage tomorrow, but anyone seen anything similar or got any suggestions what could be wrong. It is definitely more severe than tyre pressure or steering tracking?
