Golfer
Nice one Dave, there is always someone on here to help us out.
PetrolDave
[ QUOTE ] Dave, found some on Rapid, which would you go for ? http://www.rapidonline.com/netalogue/specs/62-8100e.pdf http://www.rapidonline.com/productinfo.a...;catRef=62-8192 [/ QUOTE ] I'd go for the 62-8112 (HS25 10R). That's a 25W 10 ohm resistor. you'll actually be dissipating 15W in a 10 ohm resistor, so that will be fine. Maplin and RS also sell equivalents. Andyuk911
Thanks, I bought 10 & 6 ohm, so we will see ..
PetrolDave
The 6 ohm one will dissipate 24W, so it would get quite hot... Let's hope the 10 ohm one does the trick!
Andyuk911
Dave, do I need to worry about the diameter of the jump wire ? Thanks Andy
PetrolDave
[ QUOTE ] Dave, do I need to worry about the diameter of the jump wire ? [/ QUOTE ] Use something at least the same size as the original wire to the bulb and you won't have a problem. The maximum current is only 2A with the 6 ohm resistor and 1.2A with the 10 ohm resistor.
Onkeldunkel
Great writeup! How did it go with the resistors - which one worked? Does the double sided tape still work? And one last question - how did you get the wires for the resistors out of the housings? Did you have to drill holes in the covers? Or??? Thanks in advance, -J
Andyuk911
New Resistors have not arrived due to the postal strike. Double sided tape works fine. The wires pop out the cover, no holes drilled .. seems ok
Andyuk911
Well, the resistors turned up so I pop to do this lunch time. A quick test and wow no bulb out .. So Dave you were correct 10 Ohm resistors seem to do the job. THEN DISASTER !!! OH no when I was putting the assembly back, Hello is that an LED in my Light ........ DON'T PANIC !!!!!!!!!!!! How the hell am I going to get that out .......... Did not take me more than 5 minutes, thank god ... So the only thing to test, is to see how hot the resistor gets and to see if they will need bolting down. Thanks for reading
Onkeldunkel
Great that the load resistors works... Where did you buy them? I've checked the two sites you mentioned in the beginning, but they only seem to have one type. Thanks, -J

wyliss
Hi, I have DRL's on my B7 and was considering upgrading to a near xenon lookalike, which led's are the best to go for without the need to change resistors and the like?. Thanks
PetrolDave
[ QUOTE ] led's are the best to go for without the need to change resistors and the like?. [/ QUOTE ] With ALL LEDs you need a resistor to make them take the same current as a "normal" bulb to stop the bulb failure warning happening. Until someone makes a LED with a built-in resistor you'll need external resistors like Andy.
wyliss
OK thanks Dave for your help. I thought a company was already making them...........
putz
Any chance of a link to exactly which ones you fitted please? was it these ones?
Andyuk911
I have just looked and can't see them on the site. They are white 27 SMT 1156 1073 LEDs Pop a note to them. If you pm your email I can send the note I received from them on which ones to use. These were the alternatives http://frickinbrite.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=29_104&products_id=
Cargo8
could you post a link to the LED which you considered on superbrightleds.com ? i think I have found one, but I am not sure that it is the correct fit / application. THanks! really great mod. it looks incredible.

Attranac
Hi Andy, I was wondering how this mod of yours was holding up. Is the leds still good and are they really brighter than the bulb ones? Also, how much heat are the resistors generating? Is it anything to be concerned about? Thanks
Andyuk911
Absolutely fine, The LEDs are much brighter .. the resistors do get hot .. but does not seem to be an issue ... you can get the LEDs on ebay look for 27 SMT Leds
RedRobin
....Amazingly informative thread, Andy - Excellent How-To Reading through it there may be some TSNers who would be interested in the Hella universal round LED DRL units I've just fitted. I'm thinking of those guys who would swop their fogs for them (A4's, S3's etc). Obviously yours look ace within the headlight unit. Mine are Xenon and therefore sealed. I'm going to post something in General Cars but meanwhile here's a link to mine in the GTI forum : http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/vw-golf-gti-forum/106650-daylight-running-lights-gti-10.html Page 10 onwards.
