Hi guys

Just looking for some comparative views between the 535d msport and x5 3.0d sport.

I know they are 2 different 'types' of car, but i'm after something with more diesel power and bigger in size for the mrs to use when needed.

These 2 seem to fit the bill, probably looking at 2005/06 cars, just trying to establish if the 535 is worth the extra £'s over the x5

Also, what would be classed as the 'essential' options?

TIA

Max

I like both, the 535d has a lot more room inside and is a lot more fun to drive, although the X5 is more laid back and you don't fell like you need more poke.

The 535d touring has a hell of a lot more room than the X5, you can get serious amounts in that car and looks very stealthly too.

Essentials...

Nav

Bluetooth

Xenons

Nice to have

Heads Up Display

Panoramic roof

Voice

Comfort seats

DSP/Logic 7 sound system.

sub 30k would be nice, have managed to find 2 2006 x5 3.0d sports comfortably under this but they have 'poverty' spec, which i'm not sure off

decent 535d sports seem to be over 30k, which I dont want to spend at this time

any idea by how much the x5'd s compared to the 535'd s are falling by in the trade books each month

Just reading your thread . I would go down the 5 series route. I had a 530D Sport , best car I ever had and stupidly traded it in for a Audi Q7 S Line as it was what the wife wanted , big mistake. THe Q7 is a great car but I just can't get used to a 4 x 4, I'm a car man at heart. My Father in law has had 3 X5s and I used to love getting out of the X5 and back into the 5 series for a bit of fun. The 5 series was perfect for 2 adults , a 4 year old and a baby , loads of luggage space for holidays. X5 is a good option but feel they look at bit dated now . He has just bought a new style X5 and park it next to the Q7 and it looks terrible , it is a SE with 19" wheels though.

Anyway I'm beginning to babble, I would suggest 5 series, Carbon Black or I've seen quite a few ex BMW management cars coming up for sale lately in Le Mans Blue with 19" wheels which look the dogs.

We bought one of last old shape ones last September. Its a 3.0d sport and has the 20" v spokes, running boards, comms etc. and by coincidence my dad picked up a 535d m sport last week which i drove last weekend.

I cant comment too much on the 5 but im not too keen on the interior materials, they seem to of got thinner and less substantial, the doors in particular do not seem to have the weight behind them, this is probably not a bad thing but on these kind of cars you perceive it as quality. Fantastic engine very smooth. I couldnt get on with the auto stick as your hand covers the symbols when you engage D or R but again I was only in for 1/2 an hour and its probably because its different.

The X5 I love but I have to explain that my wife drives it daily as I have a B7 RS4 saloon and I quite enjoy getting into it as its so different. Speed is quite good and it rides a small wave of torque in 2nd and 3rd but then runs out of breath a bit later on. The auto gearbox is slightly irritating, when you are travelling down a hill as soon as you touch the brakes it changes down a gear to assist the braking with the engine, in a manual its fine but in an auto you dont expect it so you lunge forward slightly. Teh ride is firm but comfortable I would test a non sport to make sure you are happy with the ride. It still amazes me how well it handles, you can genuinley throw it about quite a bit and there is very little body roll. MPG is 26 around town and raises to 31 on a 2 hour mway drive. Our car does not have xenons and I would recomend them as the non xenons are not too bright. Comms is a must. Cant think of much more, our first service is due so cannot tell you what the costs are but i beleive its 250 all in for the first one. The rears are a about 1500 - 2000 shy of teh markers after 15k miles but the fronts are fine, I will probably try less pressure in the rears as they have worn in the centres but they are huge. Any other questions please feel free to ask and good luck.

Just had a look. The one with the biege interior? Not my bag!

Not sure I can live with the BMW interior after 8 years of Audis.

Will be a company car. Not bothered about emissions anymore thanks to my new pay structure I no longer pay 40% tax as 90% of my salary is now a dividend so my CC tax is now at 22%. This means a fully loaded 530i comes in at £190 per month and my current car goes from £255 a month to £130 grin.gif
