burble
My RNS 510 arrived on Monday and my BT kit should arrive next week. All I need now is my Mk V R32 to put all this lot in!
oxfordlad
Fancy doing a "how to" when you fit it? Would be great to see it done in a GTI that is not a left hooker - even if it is just pictures!
oxfordlad
Also burble, where did you get the kit from and what is the BT kit?
burble
If I have time when I do the install I'll take pictures along the way, it'll be in an R32 rather than a GTI though. I'm somewhat limited in time these days as I work abroad pretty much permanently. If you follow the link to octavia-vrs.com there is mention there of how to order the kit. This lunchtime I did something I swore I'd never do again - I spent money with Wayside Milton Keynes. I've ordered the extra bits to make the BT installation a bit neater (to save cutting into the loom) and the adapters to be able to use both the antenna connectors on the RNS510 as the stock loom has connectors which are a bit too wide to fit onto the RNS510. oxfordlad
If you could, even the pics would be great.. the R32 and GTI interior is almost identical... Emailed the guy, will wait and see the costs.
robs1977
[ QUOTE ] DSG, cant you get the parts nice and cheap matey? Any chance on the briskoda linkage? [/ QUOTE ] Link I can't get them cheaper than Stu on Briskoda, one of those parts is £325 in the uk and the original group buy was a lot less for the whole kit,an amazing price really, they must be cheap in Czech. Bolle
Installed the OEM (Skoda) kit sunday, VAG-COM'ed the car today. Works like a charm! Phone book integration is nice, although the last/missed/accepted calls doesn't seem to work with my phone (Blackberry Pearl) Install is quite doable, biggest problem for me was removing the original cables from the quadlock connector. This to do the install with the extra cables as described on the octavia-vrs site. I managed to break one CAN bus cable, but nothing a bit of soldering couldn't fix
burble
I should have everything I need to do the install in the next couple of days. Oh, apart from the car of course! At lunchtime I collected the bits from Wayside (who much to my surprise hadn't cocked anything up - that's gotta be a first), the RNS 510 is sitting in my office and I just got an email saying that the bluetooth kit should be with me within the next few days. Depending on delivery of the car and time I'm aiming to do the installation the first weekend in December. I'll be installing the RNS 510 & bluetooth at the same time so I'll try to get some pics along the way.
oxfordlad
Look foreward to seeing the pics guys, certainly will do this mod if you guys manage it ok. Bolle, who VAGd the car? the dealer?
Bolle
Sorry, no pics during the install.... wouldn't be able to add more than the pics already available on the various forums. The mod is not that difficult. Just prepare everything in advance so you know how to dimantle the various interior parts of your car. That means *Door sills (described in bluetooth install guide vwvortex, amplifier install thread vwvortex, octavia-vrs site) *A-pillar and rooflining. (see bluetooth install guide vwvortex, trick with the iron wire and the vanity light works great) *Opening of the roof console (there's a thread on vwvortex) The most difficult of this in my opinion was getting the cable loom from under the seat through the little plastic there into the sill. Takes about 5 min fiddling as the opening from the chamber to the sill is a bit tight. Going behind the dash to the radio with the cable is no issue on lefthand drive, can't speak for right hand drive... Al this took me approx 1,5 hours. My biggest issues was removing the original wires form the quadlock plug to insert the extra wires as described on octavia-vrs. I would really suggest to get a tool form VW for this, or ask Stu (on the octavia-vrs site) for some extra advice. In the end I managed to break the plug from the CAN hi cable. It could be easily resoldered, but kind of defeats the purpose of using extra cables to avoid damaging your original wring loom... Connecting the cable to the loom took me another 2 hours, mainly due to the troubles with the plug removal and emergency solder actions. I posted a request on a Seat forum (which is quite active) for somebody to VAG-COM my car. I found a guy 20 mins from me in exchange for a bottle of wine. He assured me, that with the instructions available on the octavia-vrs and vwvortex site anybody with a basic understanding of using VAG-COM could do it. And looking at it while he was doing it, that seemed true. It was done in approx 5 min, with another 5 min writing down the original values. All in all, a job most could do I believa, I'm no DIY or car maintenance expert whatsoever. PS I don't know if I can attach a document, otherwise PM me you mail adress, I compiled the various interiour trim removal guides into one document
burble
I've got everything I need to install the bluetooth. Except the car that is. Before I install the kit I'll put something between the module and mounting bracket because from looking at it earlier it's just metal on metal which I think might rattle a bit. Bolle
Didn't have any rattling in my kit, in the week I have it in or so.
Decked
Have you got any pics of how it looks on the dash (on the MFD)? I'm going to order the parts for this later in the week. Just want to make sure it's what I expect. Thanks
burble
There's a couple here. I've seen some others too but can't remember where!
Bolle
No pics of myself at the moment, but this is what it looks like (next to the link burble posted) The system works great, and very good voice quality. The little things I've found so dar: *missed/accepted/last calls doesn't work with my Blackberry Pearl phone *In my phone's phone book, I've saved several numbers (ie home, work, mobile) under one name. When the phone book is transferred to the Bluetooth module, these numbers become individual entries. So a name with 3 numbers is visible as 3 names in the phone book on the display. *Probably due to the way my Blackberry (or I) have saved number, when recieving a call I see the number but not the associated name. My numbers are saved in the +xx-(0)x-xxxx format. Thus I know where to dial a zero when using the phone as an address book and phoning from a landline or so. When calling a name from the phone book I see the unit 'transforming' this format to +xxxxxxx, thus dropping the (0). When receiving a call, I see the number +xxxxxxx but it probably cannot 'tranform' this format back to +xx-(0)x-xxxx and thereby find the associated name. Decked
Brilliant, so can I just order these from a UK dealer? 1Z0 035 729 herstellungsdatum 20.9.2007 + Bluetoothantenne 8P0 035 503 E - € 150.00 Mikrophon-3B0035711B mit Schnittstellkabel - € 16.00 Anschlusskabel+Anschlussstecker für Steuerteil mit Pins-4E0 972 144 + Anschlussstecker für Radio(grun)-3B7 035 447B mit Pins - € 19.00 Steuerteilehalter-1Z0 035 815 - € 6.50 Abdeckung IF schwartz 1Z0 971 813 62U - € 4.50 Kleinteile (wie Schrauben, Muttern usw.) mit Leitungsschema - € 0.00 Total - € 196.00 Apparently the interface 1Z0 035 729 replaces the older interface 5P0 862 335 C Thanks
Bolle
yeah, but they will charge you a lot more.... I believe about 300 UKP for the interface alone as opposed tot the 100 UKP (150 EUR) I paid. And I believe the cable is not an OEM part as the OEM kit connects to the car on a different point. Therefore the cable is probably not available at the dealer. This cable uses OEM parts but enables you to connect the kit through the connector for the radio. Works the same, just a different point of connecting to the car. Just PM me (or Oxfordlad) for details regarding the supplier I've used.
burble
I asked a couple of UK dealers for pricing and was quoted £310 for just the interface module. I ended up paying £205 which got me everything apart from the 'optional' wires and housings (see the page on octavia-vrs.com) which I got from my local dealer for about £8. Decked
Sorted. Not really that bothered about the price as long as VW warranty the unit. I'm even going to try again and get them to fit it.... Thanks
Bolle
Seeing as it isn't an offical VW retrofit package I wonder if you can get any warranty at all? The parts are all OEM, except the cable which is from Kufatec I believe, but the install is not fully OEM AFAIK. And if it is only the parts you want warranty on, you can buy three interface for the price VW asks. I'll take my gamble on not needing to buy three units as replacements... robs1977
A VW retailer can't actually order this part,it must come from Seat/Skoda dealer, this is where Bolle may be correct because it will be them who has to do the warranty claim on it and since it is fitted to a Golf i think the claim would not be possible,a bit of a grey area. cah
Haven't read through the whole of this thread, but can you use the RNS-510 unit for bluetooth phone integration?
burble
Have a look at the 4th post in this thread - you'll see a pic of the 510 with the telephone screen up.
cah
just realised - my post looks retarded now I reread it as I've seen that picture before. What I was thinking more along the lines of was whether it connects with bluetooth or just via cradle or both? But I guess bluetooth will work. Bolle
Just to let you know that the VAG Bluetooth (module 1Z0 035 729) works perfectly with the RNS510, just as the pics show. No extra hardware or coding needed, when I plugged the RNS510 in instead of the MFD2 DVD the phone option worked immediately
