pandaA3
Hi Sorry if I'm covering old ground and everything, but I'm new to forums (my first time) and I've just purchase a 2006 A3 sprotback and would like to get bluetooth of some description fitted. I've had a good search on the forums and other sites such as navplus.us to get a bit of info but I'm still a little confused. I have a 2006 A3 sportback with the factory fitted RNS-E. I would like to get bluetooth fitted and from looking around it seems to make sense to go for the Audi OEM one, as an after market one will still involve pulling the trim apart and possibly coding with VAG-COM to get the mute to work anyway. My question is a) Is the OEM Audi bluetooth the right way to go or is it more hassle than it's worth?? b) As I have the factory fitted RNS-E, does it come with any phone prep cabling or will I have to buy a cable / loom for it to work. c) Is it really as easy as it looks on some guides to take off the trim/ glove box / door seals etc off to fit the unit or am I "playing with fire". I'm pretty good with electronics but not so confident with pulling trim apart. Any help or info would be greatley appreciated. Thanks
shark_90
a) Absolutely the right way to go. Excellent piece of kit. b) You/the installer will need to buy/make the correct loom. Usually bought from www.kufatec.de c) It's not that difficult (even I can do it ) but if you're not confident then don't even attempt it. Get someone who knows what they're doing to do it. There are a couple of installers on here (TDiAvant and Craigyb) and I have done the odd one myself
PetrolDave
I've seen one post, with pictures, where the guy managed to get the Bluetooth module behind the glovebox on his A3 (the usual place for a retrofit on the A4) which makes the install much easier. GARTHY
there is no-one in s.wales area to retrofit oem bluetooth kit, closest is craig in Manchester. Maybe if there are enough of us in Bridgend area he might make a special trip. cost £400 and 1hr installation, it uses mfsw dis etc.
pandaA3
Well I've taken the plunge and attempted to install bluetooth today. I'd ordered all the bits from Kufatec and made myself a plug and play Quadlock loom (also incorperating Dietz A/V module...tricky to fit behind the RNS-E) so that I would not need to cut wires and get some warranty grief from a dealer. Took the glovebox apart and ran the microphone to the interior light. The wiring is all in and the Dietz AV works but I have a couple of questions if no-one minds. 1) Where on earth can you fit the bluetooth module behind the glovebox in an A3 8P ( I have a CD changer). I just couldn't seem to see where it could fit? Am I going to need to install under the car seat? 2) Although I haven't VAG-COMed it (I don't have a lead. Hopefully a friend can help out with this in the week), I did connect everything up and search on my phone for the bluetooth. It said no devices found and I'm guessing that this is due to no VAGing as I'm sure the wiring is fine (hours of testing prior to install) Is there any way to test the unit before VAG-Coming it?? PetrolDave
1) I've seen a picture (can't remember where...) of the BT module installed high up right underneath the dash behind the glovebox on an A3. 2) You need VAg-COm. When you did the install some fault codes will have been thrown, as wel as getting the coding right you have to clear those before it will work. pandaA3
Hi Thanks for all the info. I'll give that a try although I was thinking I may try and rebox the unit in a new shielded case as the bluetooth PCB seems to only take up about 3/4 of the bluetooth box. Anyway, I need to code it using VAG-COM and the guy who was going to do it for me only has a K-Line cable which won't work with my car as it needs a HEX CAN Vag-Com cable. Can anyone recommend a UK site to buy one from (as I've heard the ones from ebay are a bit ropey) or should I just buy one from Ross-Tech in the states.I know the codes I need to use, it's just getting the cable now. craigyb
Fit the BT module under the carpet below the passenger seat, there is a space there for it.

pandaA3
Hi Well got the BT unit fitted under the seat (although just velcroed to the carpet) and with the help of Steve1975l we went to VAG-COM it. Only problem is neither the RNS-E or the BT module want to accept any coding changed that we make. Steve has the latest VAG-COM software with a genuine HEX CAN Ross-Tech cable. Can anyone suggest why we can't make any coding changes via VAG-COM?? I'm tempted to pull the whole thing out and ebay the lot at the moment. craigyb
If you unplug the phonr module can you code the RNS-E, that may prove your wiring or maodule at fault. Coding is done over canbus in the A3
pandaA3
It sounds like something to try. I think the wiring is fine though (famous last words) as I wired in a Dietz multimedia adapter at the same time and that is working (connected to the same CAN leads) and we can read the current values out of the BT module (which would suggest that the CAN connections are correct). Do we need to do anything with the Long Code? I read somewhere about setting byte 7 for telephone?? All we were trying was to set NAV unit to 0205713 from 0205113 and the BT module from 0011477 to 0010322 (unit was secondhand from Kufatec). This is for RNS-E with no Multi steering wheel with CD changer and BT module coded for UK.
TDiAvant
A few weeks back I had an RNS-E that would not code what ever I tried. I had never seen that before.
pandaA3
Well with Steves help again (he's been really really helpful. Thanks a lot) we did the CAN long coding. Worked perfectly. The RNS-E then coded perfectly and the dialler appeared. Connected to the BT until. BT until would just not accept the new code and remained stuck on 0011477. Tried to get it to accept the code 0000000 first but still no joy. Steve very kindley then took the glovebox off his S3 and took his BT unit out and tried to code it in his car. The BT unit would still not accept the new code. Such a shame as we could connect to the unit, the signal strength and network appeared on the RNS-E. We could dial from the RNS-E (couldn't hear anything out the speakers although the Mic is working.). I suppose it's a duff unit and should send it back to Kufatec, unless anyone can suggest anything else. Revision of BT unit is J btw.
PetrolDave
I've seen reports of quite a few J units having to be replaced - looks like there may be a reliability problem with J units. Probably worth avoiding J units ...
pandaA3
Intersting. The Kufatec guy has just told me that the J units cannot be coded to 0010322 only 0010377 (I assume US english). Does anyone know if this is the case? Will it cause any problems? [/ QUOTE ] The Kufatec guy is correct. If you try to use the speech recognition feature it will probably not recognise what you are saying. Guys in the US have reported that the EU module cannot understand them, so presumably the US module won't understand us!
pandaA3
Success. The bluetooth is now working. Coded to 0010377 being a us version and works a treat. Just a quick question. I've put the BT module under the passenger seat (literally with velcro, as per an install pdf that was doing the rounds). It seems a little precarious there. Anyone have any thoughts about if I could mount it in some kind of box under the seat. I know people suggest rip the seat out, lift the carpet and buy an e-box from Audi to install it but I really don't fancy pulling the seat out as the car is still under warranty and I don't really fancy breaking anything. Stickybloke
As craig said earlier, there's a cutout in the floor under the pax seat especially for it. Craig fitted mine - took him a couple of minutes max. Seat out, carpet out, bt unit into cubby hole, job done.
