clayman
Bought a passat the other day. Really nice car after driving a mini or 2 years... But my only problem is that when the steering is on full lock something is squeaking.. Any help would be great. Cheers!!
Rustynuts
Power steering pump sounds like a possibility. Check the fluid, and check the drive belt for correct tension.
clayman
thanks! i'll check tomorrow. I started suspecting the pump when i realised that it was squealing without the car moving (but on full lock).
clayman
The belts tight and the fluid is at max, still squeaks... Could it be the pump?
Mook
Yes it could. The same thing happened on my R32 and one of our old Passats. About £170 to replace plus labour, IIRC. Oh and welcome to Tyresmoke, Clayman
Wobby
I thought most power steering pumps make a noise when on full lock? Not a squeak though, maybe a quiet (ish) "wurr"? If not i may have something else needing fixing on the old Passat!
Mook
It's more of a noise like a belt is slipping, but it's oil getting past the internal seals. The car should still be perfectly driveable, but if it goes, it goes
clayman
Cheers mook! If it does go, does it just mean i dont have any PAS or no steering at all?
Wobby
I think the steering just goes very stiff, would be worrying if you are driving fast and going into a tight corner as it goes How bad is the squeak? Is it definately from the pump?
clayman
I think it is from the pump, because when im stationary and put the steering on full lock it starts squeaking. Its just the normal sounding squeak when a belt needs tightened up.. but this belt seems tight as anything. The pump is on the aux belt with the alternator, right? Theres also a rattle when the car is cold at about 1000rpm... sounds tinny. Well im off to deep sea world! if i make it back i'll get a sound recording of the noise etc! Cheers! Mook
Like Wobby says - you'll still have steering (it's power-assisted, rather than full power steering, like you get on industrial kit), but it'll be very heavy.
cruiser647
Check the alternator. This what what the noise was on mine. It was not the alternator itself, it was the pulley on it. It had siezed and needed replacing. My Bora also rattled at about idle, once replaced, the noise was gone and the P/S is not squeaky anymore. clayman
Cheers! i'll check the pulley tomorrow. Is it possible to replace the pulley or do i have to get a new alternator?
cruiser647
I think the pulley is replaceable.
meriafel
It was the alternator pulley on my sons 98 Passat Sport Tdi that seized---- that snapped the ribbed auxilliary belt----- that shredded into 'string'----- that the VW dealer didn't remove----- that entered the cambelt cover when he restarted the car---- that 'jumped' the cambelt----- that smashed the valves----- that knocked the teeth off the flywheel when the dealer tried to start the seized engine---- and bent the srarter shaft..............! Almost seems funny now. Moral...change the alternator pulley when you replace the auxilliary belt. While it's off replace the power steering belt also. So, don't ignore the alternator pulley replacement!
clayman
just had a look at the car again, this time with a torch. Seems the belt at the bottom is slack as. I didnt realise this car had so many belts... im used to the mini with only one!! So the thin belt at the bottom, what does that do? And what about the thick ones? VWDebbie
I suspecting the pump when i realised that it was squealing without the car moving (but on full lock). my current garage that have worked on the car said they make that noise!!!. I have taken it to a garage to have a towbar fitted and got second opinion on the noise, who say its the power steering pump. When on full lock you can see the belt jumping and making the noise. Now after the expensive year i have had with this car (see my other posts). Is this a simple job to do myself, with help from my dad!! Although the Haynes manuals are helpful but not as good as they used to be, please give some advice on things that could go wrong. thanks for reading Debbie
