Mk5 R32: Whining noice when on full lock??

I've had my new Mk5 since June, after owning a Mk4 .:R32 for 2 years and so far I'm loving every minute of it!

However, one small niggling issue has been annoying me recently which is that when I have the steering on full lock (either direction) and I'm moving slowly when parking etc, a grinding/whining noise can be heard and you can also feel something shaking movement through the steering wheel.

Does anyone know what this could be, or has anyone also experienced this on the Mk5. Should I stop being so nitpicking, and is it just standard behaviour for the power steering? I had a much worse kind of similar experience on my Mk4 and in the end after several visits to the stealers they eventually had to replace the Rear diff!! smashfreakB.gif

Any advice or comments would be really appreciated! 169144-ok.gif

It shouldn't make the noise. It could be caused by a leak in the power steering oil feed pipe, meaning not enough oil is getting to the pump, or it could be the pump itself.

The pump nearly went on my Mk4, so I had it replaced before it did. £300 or so, IIRC, plus labour.

Gte your VW dealer to check it and check it again. Should all be covered by warranty.

Mk5s use electromechanical steering.

I have experienced the same problem, since I've got the car in May. It is going to the stealers the 26th.

But when I put on 19" wheels the sound was gone, but I recently switched to OEM with winter tyres on and the sound is back.

I think I've read somewhere that there is a note in the service manual at the stealers about this issue but haven't got it verified. I'm just waiting for them to look over the car and get me some answers at the 26th.

Hopefully the issue will be resolved then!

AFAIK the system on the MK5 is EPAS and not normal hydraulic PAS, its a well known fault in the dealer network mine had its 2nd rack fitted the day before the bastards stole it, that was after 6 months and about 5k miles. The two times it was changed there was a delay to it going in to the dealers due to parts on back order.
