qwertyking121212
Hi, My Golf seems to be erratic when idling - it jumps up and down very quick between 750-850. Although it does not do this all the time. I cleaned the Throtle body at the weekend, reset the learned values and then realigned the Throtle Body. New airfilter as well. I've used Vag-Com and there are no fault codes recorded? As for fuel consumption - I get 28-30MPG town driving (Average 11mph). Is this low in comparison to others? The car still has an erratic rev occasionally - the puzzle is that it does not happen all the time. Also when I now Jab the accelerator the Throtle Body makes a quick sucking noise as though it is taking in air very quickly - is this normal? By the way the engine is a 1J1 - think it is the AZD model (I will check tonight). However it is the 1.6 16v engine where the Air filter is in the Engine Cover itself. Also does the Throtle Body have any breathers - I couldn't see any when I took it out. Further, I connected VAG-COM and looked at the Lambda figues when the idle was up and down. I've attached the graphs, the Lambda factor appears to high I think. Does this mean there is too much air or too little fuel? the other Lambda seems rather high (>+10 on idle). How does this look to you all? Hopefully this should help others as well. Cheers D
Mook
MPG is about right for a 1.6. Have you changed the MAF sensor? These are always the first things to check on all VW group cars. The problem is that they won't always record faults in the ECU, even when they're not measuring the air-flow properly. It's not until they go outside the tolerance that the ECU starts to record it. Have you checked that there's not an air leak in any one of the pipes?
qwertyking121212
Hi there, thanks for the reply. The car doesn't have a MAF - it's the model without one. I think it has a pressure sensor instead. This gives a stable reading in VAG-COM when the car is idling funny. As for an air leak - I have look left right and centre - doesn't seem to be one. Also with an Air leak would I not get the issue all the time, not randomly? Cheers
Mook
You won't always get a problem all the time with an air leak - it depends where it is - if the engine is under load, it will move slightly and that can seal an air-leak. No otehr suggestions at the minute, I'm afraid, but someone else will be along shortly, I'm sure
