Another 6463 Update Problem

Found out via vagcom that my r32 doesnt have the 6463 update so contacted local VW dealer (Cardiff) and was told that it would cost £75+vat to have the ECU update put on my car

They didnt even know about it, so dont know if they even have the CD with the update to actually carry out the work. Going to try a few more local dealers but im assuming majority will be like this

Anyone had the update done in South Wales area? also is it worth contacting VW about this?

The update was launched by VW late 2003 (I think), so if the car is a young (2004 ->) Mk 1V then it may have been sorted at the build stage.

With mine, the symptom was a lack of fuel, moments of hesitance (like it was out of breath) always at lower speed take off.

Junctions from start, slowing down to a crawl and then accelerating- more noticeable in warmer weather.

Afterwards the car had more poke, instant lift off (under any circumstance) and 2 mpg of the average 25 mpg.

I'm not sure, but if you have Vagcom could you not find a copy on the Internet, download and DIY ?

If your car needs the patch then you do have a fair argument to ask VW to do it FOC. It should have been picked up on a service routine.

well VW UK say they are free to charge as not under warranty - also said its chassis number specific etc etc which is irrelevant as no one has asked for mine in any correspondence yet!

I do have warranty from Warranty Direct but not sure if worth it over £75 as if you claim in first 6 months they get you to pay those 6 months upfront apparently...

Will try other dealers in Bridgend and other areas. Mine is a 03 model and do get that hesitation (not massively evident but definately there) and like mentioned i bet this is more so in summer.

the 6463 update is only for cars that need it

if yours hasnt got it, then you may not need it

so vw dealers dont always update your ecu

All MK4 R32s need the upgrade - VW didn't release it until well after all the UK cars had been built. It was late summer 2004 when 6463 was released to the dealers.

A couple of folk shave mentioned that Revo Stage 1 does a similar thing to the 6463. Would people here agree or disagree with that?

I believe the Revo stage one unwittingly solved the problem that the 6463 set out to cure whilst giving better performance to boot. The 6463 was produced to solve the hesitation problem in 3rd gear. Mine certainly had that problem which the 6463 cured. I dont have the Revo myself but believe im right on this one (Standing by to be corrected of course !!) 169144-ok.gif

The 6463 ecu flash was available under warranty and you shouldnt have to pay for it, no matter what the dealer says. Its a safety problem as it didnt just happen in 3rd gear. I had mine hesistate at low rpms when pulling out of junctions which some would call a "flat spot".

Its very hard to explain but it feels like there isnt enough fuel/air going into the engine which caused the hesistation, it was easily cured by more throttle, not ideal though.

Many customers including members on the forums complained to VW UK and the Master Technician started talking to the guys over in Germany for a fix.

A fix was developed in the form of a ECU update. This proved later when owners started doing rolling road events etc that the cars were actually putting out more bhp but less torque around those rev ranges.

When I had mine done it was like a different beast altogether.... the throttle was razor sharpe and no more hesistation.

Maybe VW used the Audi 250bhp map and adjusteded it to suit R32, who knows.

All I can say that it is a MUST for the original R32.

I dont usually post much on here as it brings back memories frown.gif

The problem was traced to the knock sensing system being over sensitive and so it was backing off the ignition timing when it shouldn't have done. As Riz has described, the hesitation was felt at basically any time you wanted to put your foot down and extract some performance, whether over-taking or pulling away or whatever.
