stewz
Is it normal for these gearboxes to whine, well it's more of a whistle than a whine, high pitched. there are no problems with the box, it changes smoothly, no clunks and the cars only done 71000 miles but i can't help noticing than whine? Ska
Can you pin point that whine? Is to the front near side or to the rear? Does it happen when stationary or only whilst on the move?
stewz
Only really noticable when your driving slowly, as the roas noise etc builds up you loose the noise. It's hard to say where abouts it comes from..
Ska
Does it go away on braking or evident when accelerating?
Figure11
I currently have a whine on the engine. I narrowed it down to the AC Compressor. Only here it at low speed / tick-over and goes away when I shut down the AC. I reckon it's just the magnetic clutch. Mike
quattroman777
I had a whine coming from around the front seat of my A6...... After further investigation I discovered it was coming from the passanger.

stewz
[ QUOTE ] Does it go away on braking or evident when accelerating? [/ QUOTE ] I'm normally going out first thing in the morning when i hear it most, then i think i must just get used to it, i have just got the car back from some major work being carried out on it so i will check to see if it's still there. Can't say as i've noticed it more on acceleration or braking, it just seems like a whiny gearbox to me. I has one before on an old vauxhall i owned, and it sounds like that one when it started to go wrong.
Ska
Does it happen when sationary or moving? If its stationary could well be the clutch on the a/c compressor mine started doing this the other day but seems to disapper the more you use it.
