Paddy_Driver
Hello All, Have approx (only) 11k miles now on our 2 yr old GTI. My wife drives it most with kids so hence not large mileage. Anyway, have the original Bridgestones on the 18" Monza's and have noticed that on the four tyres at the outside of the thread there are tiny surface cracks around the edge of the tyre - not too far in and do not extend down the wall of the tyre. They extend a little bit in on the thread but not all the way. Has anyone seen this on theirs? After 2 years I would have expected to have had to change them but the wear is fine and this is not even something that rotating back and front would avoid cause it is on all tyres. Any thoughts or help appreciated. Thanks Paddy PS - will attach a pic later on if needed but thought first that some one might have seen same. petsy
my first thought was that of the rubber perishing. a close up photo would be invaluable in this instance.
Paddy_Driver
Thanks Petsy, will get a photo tomorrow in daylight. Kinda surprised that such a common tyre would have this occur. Have looked at other tyres on cars and do see very slight cracking etc but on ours it seems a little extreme. Will see what the photo's can provide. Paddy_Driver
Just to update this story - this morning got 4 x new Potenza's under warranty Result I would say. The fitter's I had to go through were not who I would have preferred and they did leave a scrape on the face of one of the 18's but it was one of the marked one's anyway so not too annoyed. Got €800 worth of free tyres so cannot complain too much. Paddy
Tarmac_Terrorist
Blimey, I'm surprised it was that easy to get 4 new tyres! Good news. :D Mine is now 2 years old with less miles and no signs of perishing. Maybe because it's garaged they've faired better. I'm guessing that UV light damages them too. I would not be happy with the scuff though. If the lacquer is damaged on the face of the wheel then I would have thought that the corrosion would set in very soon. IIRC a new wheel is £360. Paddy_Driver
Hi TT, I think much of it was down to UV damage - but I was not saying that. Car would commonly sit for the 5 week days in the sun cause since we had our second little one it is not driven much except at weekends and odd short trip. I was not massively displeased over the scuffs (was a little p'ed though) - looking closer it is on two wheels but my worry was re big chips in the outer rim from a tyre wrench but these are not there. The scuffs are on the face and yes one does specifically break the laquer but what I have done is just put a little layer of my own VW laquer over it (from a touch up kit) not ideal but hopefully stops the rot. If the wheels were totally undamaged beforehand then I would have made a BIG issue but in this situation they did their best but guess it best was not good enough. I do have some of the wriggly worms in evidence but these are from areas that got chipped previously and again I have laquered over to try stop it getting any worse. The wheels are not perfect anymore - as hard as wifey has tried they do get marked. There are none of the big massive groove's in the face of them as you would get from rubbing along a kerb but there are plenty of little knicks along outer edge. Overall the car body is unblemished in 2.5 years - we still drive in circles looking for best spaces - so I am happy to get 4 new tyres free gratis and hopefully another 2 years before I need to consider going to the tyre monkeys. Tarmac_Terrorist
Hi PD - it might be worth considering regularly applying some sort of tyre dressing if your car is left in the bright sunlight for extended periods. I think some claim to help prevent cracking etc
Paddy_Driver
Hi TT, I was a regular applicator of the Meg's Tyre Gel - did not tell them that though as worried they might blame it. The cracking was into the threads also so not sure it would have helped. Thanks Paddy
