How much would an A8 weigh?

I've wondered this myself... but we've not got the kit to weight the engine and gearbox, but one day we'll have to pallet one off and we'll find out 169144-ok.gif

Really heavy bits - Front seats, rear seats if they are electric, Rear diff (prop shaft is really light though), Fuel tank isn't light and could be minised for the track, glass is pretty haeavy as its twin all round on the V8's, the doors uppers are all steel, they're heavy. Carpets, mats and dashboard could all go and save a fair chunk of weight. Battery could be reduced once the electrics go away, climate/heater module is heavy, so is the wiring loom. Get rid of unnecessary wiring would help. The wiring loom is a two man lift ! dump the spare wheel, tool kit etc, lots of plastic outer trims that are unneccesary, strip the boot, door cards, lose the whole sunroof tray and weld up the hole.

I bet you could nearly half the weight if you really tried..

Course, You have to add the weight of the supercharger haven't you Matt! 169144-ok.gifECLIPSe.gif

Maybe cool.gif

I am using the A8 so little lately I was thinking about turning it into a track only car. Part of me thinks that is a stupid idea as the car is lovely but with the rising fuel prices, insurance and road tax it makes me think that per mile my car costs a fortune, so I could put it to a different use.

I enjoy watching the Australian V8 Supercars on MotorsTV and think that the A8 could do a very good job in a similar way.

Ooooooooooooo do it do it do it dot! Can I watch?

Was watching the Aussie V8s last night (or 3:30 this morning to be precise) just like NASCA but for more skillful drivers.

Reducing the frontal weight is possible. Radiators, oil cooler to the rear. Loose the AC compressor, lights etc. Reduce unsprung weight. Prolly never be competetive, but great fun. bowdown.gif

We've been thinking about this a bit more today and think it could end up rather nose heavy....

Not unfixable, but worth bearing in mind...

Yours seems like a nice car to strip, we've got plenty of far worse ones :-)

How would it be more nose heavy than it already is? becuase of removing the fuel tank?

I agree mine is too good really but it would be fun laugh.gif

A8parts could even run an A8 track/hire car for ADI laugh.gif

Well Mike I was trying to guess as to how much it would weigh power/weight etc as surely we would benefit from the aluminium body/space frame so it might not be as uncompetetive as you think, especially given a few hundred extra ponies

My S2 is turning out quite nose heavy which will make it "interesting" on the track to say the least.. but from a speed point of view I've stripped the seats and carpets out, boot trims etc and it's already made a massive difference. I reckon I can lose another 50kg from the interior and hopefully 60-80kg from the engine bay.

I wouldn't do it to your car Matt, but it would be interesting to build one!!

Actually I wonder if endurance racing would be the way to go. Bullet proof engine, fit LPG tanks to double range, A8 parts sponsor with half used tyres and bits and Botang, Figure 11, A8 Tony, IT_S8 as drivers. Need a pit crew.

We could be Team 8 Ball; the comfort crew! ZZZ.gif

Link Like this but for any car. Like this!

Who's up for it? smile.gifECLIPSe.gifFIREdevil.gif169144-ok.gif

I'm up for it, but only if I get a go...

If we can use pit crew as drivers, then happy to double up smile.gif

Erm.. Maybe not! Just looked at the costs! £3,200 + VAT to enter a team + £400 + VAT to enter a car and you need a class B racing license (maybe not too hard to get).

Rule 17.10.2 - We can keep the radio in smile.gif Racing round Brands to some speed metal sounds like a hoot.

31.1 - Must fit dunlop tyres

32.2 - We'd be up against GT3, GT2 restricted and LM3000 cars.

Then again, anther doc from the site suggests it's £1,200 for the year and maybe just £150/race.

Anyway.. Now that I've crapped on the price of the dream... Still sounds like a hoot smile.gif
