Thinking of getting rid of the Q7 and buying a A5 3.0Tdi Sport . I've been advised by the salesman to wait for the auto box rather than buying a manual demonstrator. Can anyone offer any advice on the A5, spec etc. Was going to go for an S5 but salesman said the 3.0 TDi was the best in the range in his opinion. The Q7 is a great car but I'm sick of the size of the thing and also 100litre fuel tank !

Well I'm not an owner yet but I'm ordering my car in the next few weeks. Been looking at spec and have narrowed it down to the following:

3.0TDi Tiptronic Quattro Sport

Metallic (pretty sure Quartz grey but I might go Ice silver)

Black leather or black leather with alcantara

Advanced parking system

19" Y spoke wheels

Black headlining

Interior light pack

Aluminium hologram inlays

Storage pack

Comfort pack

Cruise control

B & O sound system

Audi music interface

Sat Nav plus

Bluetooth - Low

Been quoted end of september delivery if ordered in the next couple of weeks

If fuel prices and crappy mpg are not an issue for you then defo the S5. You wont be able to beat the growl of its V8 and sexy looks. The TDi is a superb car as well with fantastic mpg is a very popular choice these days. The engine is is kicking out some serious torque which is moreimportant these days than all out pony power. You cant go wrong with the 3.0 tdi; its the best of both worlds!

That's some spec. ££?

When does the tip get replaced with the DSG?

It comes in at just over £43k

I have been waiting for the 2.0T to be introduced to the A5 range and then waiting to see about DSG but as usual, Audi know nothing (or say they know nothing anyway) and you can only wait so long for a new motor:grin: . Mine was due to be changed at the start of this month and as it stands I have a long wait from order to delivery so bugger it, unless anything changes between now and 19th May, I'm having a soot chucker even though my mileage has gone down to around 13-14k p.a. and I don't really need one!

With diesel at £1.20 a litre you need to do some mileage (at least 12k+) for it to make any financial sense over the S5.

I'm the same , if ordered now they are quoting September, was looking at your spec which is pretty similiar to mine but I'm sticking with met black. I'm trying to get the dealer to fit the S5 side skirts as part of deal ( dealer fit only I believe), I think the car needs the subtle kick out under the door. Was going to go for the 20" RS wheels but the ride may be too harsh and at £1550 the Y spokes seem to be the betterchoice at only £650 upgrade.

Asked the dealer about the Ipod interface , he says the standard head unit now comes with a slot for a memory card so depending on size you can fill it with albums !

Booster's spec is virtually the same as I went for, except mine's manual, which took a bit of getting used to after four Tiptronic cars, but not something I regret at all. I've also got the hill hold assist, which is the best 45 quids worth of option I picked!

Coming from a D3 S8, the differences are massive-

* No more not being able to park because there's not enough room in the bay

* Being able to reverese into my drive, even if someone's parked on the opposite side of the road

* Insurance £800 per year less

* road tax soon to be £200 per year less

* Fuel, was spending £60-£80 / week (old prices) , now £25 per week. (A5 does 28mpg on the trip to and from work, whereas S8 did 5mpg and the RS6 11 mpg. On the trip up to the boat every weekend the A5 averages 45mpg, with a best of 48mpg, whereas S8 best was 22 mpg and RS6 best 24 mpg.)

I bet filling up 100 litres at the pumps is fun!! 70 litres of diesel v power in the 5 is painful enough for me

  • 4 months later...

Got shot of the Q7, which I loved by the way, and got the 3.0 TDI A5.

Still smiling.

I keep looking at it from the window. It is SO MUCH FUN!!! DO go for the 3.0. What an engine. What a car!

Manual. Go for manual. Really. I know you think you'll miss the auto box, but this car begs to be driven with a manual box. Come off a roundabout, boot it down to 2nd then floor it. And feel the happiness!!! Gives you control over your driving style, and over your fuel consumption. See note about cruise control below.

Right, as for extras:

- Go for sat nav. It's not worth 2 grand (I have a tom tom which cost 300 quid and has the advantage of showing me speed cameras); but.... having your navigation on the in-dash screen is so much more convenient. Plus, you will see slightly better resale values, so will not feel quite so ripped off.

- Get the B&O sound system. Really. It's not quite so good (IMHO) as the Q7 BOSE, but then again you're in a smaller car. The Q7 Bose at times felt like being in a club - so much bass.

- Go for nice wheels. I like the ones that come as standard with the sport model.

- Go for phone prep (of course - who doesn't?), but get the cheapest one.

- I always choose cruise-control. So useful on the motorway, and it pays for itself in fuel economy. On long motorway journeys, I'm getting 49m to the gallon (honestly). Careful use of cruise control and minimal use of brakes.

Not if you take into account the new road tax and residuals....

I can average 45mpg on the motorway, and that's at a steady 70-80mph...

The only thing it's lacking is that nice V8 growl... but then it doesn't exactly sound like a diesel anyway, I've had passengers surprised when I've told them it's a diesel. The 3.0 TDI is pretty smooth engine.
