SACD Players ?

Personally, I despite being a young-un, I'm of the old school vinyl breed.

If you want to hear War or the Worlds in it's ture form, get in on the black stuff.

Ah, I'd agree with you about vinyl (I spent three times as much on my turntable as on my SACD player) and War of the Worlds was the first LP I ever bought new. Vinyl does give a much warmer sound. But I'd have to admit I don't often go to the effort of digging out the vinyl version when I can cue up a series of albums in a row on my FLAC player and leave them running. Convenience wins, I'm afraid, and since this was a discussion about CD vs SACD I didn't bring vinyl into the discussion.

thats where you're going wrong then. you need a decent sacd player.

in any case, the recording/mastering process hasnt changed for ages, so not sure how vinyl could sound "warmer". maybe due to amplification differences on your setup between phono in and cd/aux etc.

war of the worlds sounds pretty good on cd (its one of my faves - especially brave new world and forever autumn - shame mastering quality isnt the best)- any limitations on the sound are due to its age, not the medium i'd say.

eg. have you heard a digital remaster of duran duran - sounds crap. but their original equipment was poo. same as with photography - you cant add detail to something, just edit whats already there.

i borrowed dark side of the moon yesterday after some of you chaps saying how good it was. money and time are ok, but the rest is rather pants.

recording quality also nowhere near as rich/warm/detailed as a modern madonna album ...sound quality, not quality of tunes! :-)

I think I'll have to comprehensively disagree with pretty much everything you've said there, Chav, or at least say that we seem to be talking at cross purposes. I'm not really trying to address the detail of a recording, more how it comes across, and I find (as a couple of others here) that vinyl is more pleasant, if I can be bothered to use it.

I think the amount I've spent on turntable vs SACD player is about right. Beyond a certain point you're chasing diminishing returns when spending more, and I think I've got things more or less in balance.

With SACD, you're hearing things completely differently from me, to the extent that I'm worried your hi-fi isn't set up right. Or is it just that you're looking for detail and I'm not so much, more the overall experience.

I'm afraid I too am actually a vinyl man, the old Linn LP12 is still going strong, and I still buy albums when available. The special edition Radiohead "In Rainbows" has two 12" 45 pressings covering the album, and sounds heaps better than the CD's.

It's a music thing really though, even good CD's still sound cold and "un-musical" compared to a good vinyl system. But I'm in agreement with S8ed - Convenience is winning the day, and I am in the process of converting most of my vinyl collection to high bit rate MP3 for general listening and for in the car.

I don't think I'll spend the money on the SACD player at present, unless it really sounds very good, I'm more likely to invest in some clever multi room gear, as in reality I'll get more enjoyment and use from that.

But good to see some healthy debate here.
