Vagabond
the 140!
Rustynuts
Well, not quite the same car but the same engine... My Seat Altea is doing 49 to the gallon, measured over the last few thousand miles. It'll do 60mpg on the motorway at HGV speeds, and cruising at legal limit (no more mind you) it'll easily top 53mpg. What kills it is the wife driving with the aircon on all the bloody time! and sitting with the engine running at every available opportunity, such as starting the car, remembering that she's forgotten her mobile phone and searching the house for 5 minutes, and then actually getting going. Even so, 49 isn't bad considering her driving habits. It'd be over 50 if I drove it all the time, but I'm rather obsessive about mpg (what with the cost of diesel etc.). Rustynuts
Okay, just done 120 miles there and back to Penrith, with a brief stop for fuel, and a half hour stopover there before heading back. Set the cruise control for 70 on the dual carriageway and 60 on the A roads, and observed all 30 and 40mph speed limits there and back. Did 56mpg for the whole journey. cruiser647
Not too bad mpg wise for a heavyish car like that. Was the car loaded up with people and stuff?
sotty
Getting 50+ out of my GT TDI on the daily run. Went to Lincoln and back yesterday and took it really, really easy (also the traffic was slow) but averaged 58! Rusty? did cruise control help the econ? I hear that it sometimes kills MPG or am I watching too much Clarkson??
Rustynuts
II find that cruise control helps insofar as it stops me squeezing the go pedal and speeding, and in a roundabout fashion saves me fuel accordingly. But having said that I always find that normal driving is better for absolute economy, but (as Clarkson pointed out) it's a bit hard keeping concentration. I view it as a challenge really, but I thought for the sake of this experiment that a cruise generated figure would be least ambiguous. Edit: Me, the wife, and one kid in the car. cruiser647
With the cruise control, I think you need to turn it off when going downhill, and also turn it off when going uphill (uses fuel keeping you up to speed, where a constant throttle would be best). Sparticus
I have a 140 GT TDi 4 Motion. On a return trip to Birmingham this week, 150 miles each way, I got 51mpg keeping pace with the traffic on the M1 at 70-85 mph and then tanked it home and saw 44 mpg. I never see below 40 mpg no matter how I drive and have seen 60 mpg driving like Miss Daisy. An amazing engine, plenty of pace, economy and relatively smooth once on the go. dave877
I have a 2007 GT TDI 140. The missus sent me the attached as proof she can get 70mpg+. She claims to get this most days on her dual carriageway commute. The long term average over about 9k miles is 51mpg and rising, although we are in Norfolk where traffic is light. Like others, driven hard it still seems to do 42mpg+. It does seem very sensitive to driving style but on any kind of a run it should return 50+ even with bursts of speed and a bit of traffic. If you're looking nearly new and after good economy then would a 118d with efficient dynamics be worth a look too?
pingpongpo
Although its a different engine, I just did Exeter to Ipswich yesterday and saw 56mpg (130PD golf) and that was doing 75-80mph all the way. Confirmed it this morning when I filled up......
