Any news on the MkVI GTI?

Sorry I took so long, Geoff! Suspension fitting, testing, and reviewing, interrupted me!

The Mk6 definitely feels like everything VW are saying it is but we're only looking at the standard Golf range so far. My dealer offered me a test drive in that silver TDI but I wasn't interested.

It's everything Snoopy is saying too, but just doesn't hold my interest personally. Neither does a standard Mk5 Golf (non GTI/R32).

No problem Robin mate, I was not expecting you to make any special trips or anything and was in no rush for them as the only one we maybe interested in is the GTI anyway.

I do keep thinking though is it worth it? I keep seeing secondhand prices plumit and that makes me think maybe a pirelli as my car would be a better idea.

The Pirelli's are quite rare and theoretically should hold their value better (perhaps). But wouldn't you feel a bit sick if you bought a Pirelli to then fall in love with the Mk6 GTI when it comes out soon-ish (a few months away?).

IF, and it is a big IF, the 'R-GTI' (or whatever it's called) is launched, that will surely compete with Mk6 GTI sales.......Wouldn't it? - There are so many GTI enthusiasts who are saying they'd wait and see what this 'R-GTI' is like before moving from their Mk5 GTI.

True its why im happy to wait im in no rush at the moment.

IIRC theres 246 mk5 pirellis at the last update were as Ed30s are everywere there like a plague

I do keep thinking a mk1 GTI campaign(pirelli) sitting next to a mk5 pirelli GTI would look nice in the garage lol. 'pirelli boys kicking aRSe since 83' :Slap:

Im going to wait and see, either way our mk5 is here to stay till it dies its going nowere.

I personally think the Pirelli is a decent model and actually saw one on the road the other week. The wheels looked better in real life. Just not sure about the 'urban gangsta' half rear tints and yellow stitching but these are fairly minor things given the car has the more powerful GTI engine.

I read in Auto express about 3 weeks ago that the Pirelli used values are supposedly less than the standard GTI (less popularity I guess). I've not verified this but maybe there is a deal to be done on a demo / used model??

Still not sure of the headlights and rearlight clusters. The lack of deep front grill is going to take time getting used to. Many are commenting on how much improved the interior is - I can't see tghe improvement in the images so will need to see it in the flesh. Liking the twin pipes though. Perhaps it would be easy to modify the back end to accommodate a Milltek quad easier than replacing the entire rear valance like you have to for the MKV.

I think the interior looks first class - from pictures at least. Plastics visibly look better quality.

I find the external looks a little more modern than the MKV but a little too soft - almost Japanesish?? The rear end reminds me of a facelifted MKIV somehow rather than a facelifted MKV!

If I was in the market for a change then I would probably consider the MKVI together with a S3 perhaps.

I hope VW has addressed the poor OEM sound systems

You're right MB it is getting on a bit. I personally think that the Audi would get it's power down better and would be more sure footed, particularly as UK roads are wet or damp about 70% of the time.

I reckon the 'average' enthusiast would be able to extract more from the A3 on the road than thew newer GTI. I must add that I haven't driven a S3 but have had experience of other swift 4wd cars and they have always inspire more confidence in me on the limits / poor road conditions. +++

....That's what I don't like - They can lull you into travelling too fast for the road and conditions.

True, but the same can apply to many cars. The faster the car, the better the suspension and sometimes even the noise levels can all affect perception and judgement if one is not careful. That's where driver skill and judgement come in of course. 4 wd is used in rallying for a very good reason though and the drivers are certainly not lulled into false sense of security. I think it's fair to say that in most wet and damp conditions a 4x4 will usually outperform a fwd or rwd and therefore can be pushed that little bit harder (safely) ;) More importantly, even under normal driving conditions / speeds, in an emergency situation most 4x4 cars (not the Chelsea Tractor variety) are more planted and forgiving.

Yes; I think you've hit the nail on the head, TT and perhaps that's why I'm struggling to like it.

I too wouldn't want more cabin sound proofing; want to hear my Milltek. As it stands I'm fitting a non-res section at the end of the month for increased effect!

Yes they have. As a very picky audiophile and also somone into building competition level sound quality systems in cars i can tell you its far better.

The speakers are at far better locations for imaging, they also seem 'better' quality. The headunit is no longer blaupunkt and are far better for it. Also the great news for anyone not as picky as myself is you can at a very good price for what you get imo spec the dynaudio system with the RCD510 headunit (external amplifier, active powered dynaudio speakers, built in processor, 8 speakers (6" mid+tw front and rear)) thats a good leap up in quality too and is far superior to Audi's optional 'blows' system.
