Any news on the MkVI GTI?

Hmm may not be sooo bad.

I was at work earlier so didn't have time to mess about with comparisons.

Comparing a UK 1.4 TSI GT against a German Highline 1.4 TSI of the same power output the German car is 23,450 euro which (according to XE.com) would work out as £21594. In the UK the equivalent is £18595.

So the prices may not be quite so silly money after all.

So prob'ly my spec above may be actually end being around 3K less...

If this GTI-R really comes to fruition, with 265bhp and "4-wheel" drive, then I am going to buy one. If that's the case, then it seems pointless to spend £1250 to upgrade to stage 2 + if by the end of this year these beasts will be available. Just imagine how damn tunable this car would be :grin: Revo, start working on a map, please :)

You can now configure the new GTI on VW's website, although I discover to my horror that it's going to have tinted rear windows as standard. WHY? WHY? WHY? What's the fascination with these wretched tinted rear windows these days? Unless these can be deleted or it's a mistake, for me a new GTI is well and truly OFF!

I'm with you on that Timski. I think the fashion was started by undertakers with those discreet estate cars in which they initially collect the deceased. The MPV crowd soon caught on to this and little Tommy in the back enjoyed pretending to be an 'urban gangsta'. I can only assume then that the Saxo boyz caught on to this idea and thought it would make their car a more private 'passion wagon' for 'nailing their bitches'. A bit like Lexarse lights, they eventually arrived on more main stream hatches including the GTI :P:grin:

Seriously though, I don't have any issue with these tints being on the option but I don't like the idea of them for myself. Each to their own though and I know some folks do have a strong preference / potential need for them. +++

Hmm Xenons have gone walkies in the trip over the channel.

Also once I spec up without them (which actually is a bit of a deal breaker as I really like them on my car) I get to £26500 for a car with met paint, 18s, leather and dynaudio/ipod.

I would estimate that if xenons suddenly appear (unlikely, but you never know... they'll be ~ £750) all of which adds up.

Hmmm, unless decent discounts are in the offing I'm may thinking of alternatives (there a pair of highly specd 9 month old 330d tourings in the Stirling Bee M dealer for £28750 which are tempting me).

And what about DSG?

My Mk5 with DSG, Xenons, sunroof, etc etc cost £25k back in July 05 [waits for Mook to point out that I've spent probably about an additional £10k, mostly on stickers :grin:]

I think that rumours/expectations of the R20T (or whatever it will be called) will seriously harm sales of the Mk6 GTI because the enthusiasts amongst us will wait and see.

My Wife prefers a manual gear box so I didn't spec it...

It's another £1300 for DSG, which now taking it really close to the 2nd hand Bee emm.

And some other person has taken the depreciation hit on it (which I estimate to be at least 10K).

Saying that neither of us have driven a BMW, so we could hate it.

Just have to see, VW may not have lost me yet.

So, are your car choices led by just what you consider 'best-value-for-money'?

Or led by the car which suits your lifestyle and appeals to you the most? (Assumed within a cost limit)

....

A good point Robin. For me both areas are seriously considered. In my opinion there is a limit as to how much a Golf is worth / could cost regardless of model.

There are base model Golfs available at half the price of a highly specced GTI these days. I do tend to consider the premium i'm paying for the model I want v's the base model which shares many of the components and much of the same R & D costs. Obviously you can't be totally steered by this or you'd never drive the car you want!

Fair enough - I thought the answer might be a combination of my two questions.

I'm probably unusual [shutup, Mook!] in that I make no comparison whatsoever with other car prices - It's simply a case of asking myself which car suits my needs and desires and if I have the money available to pay for it or not. I ignore everything else.

So, for example, if I wanted a Lupo GTI I wouldn't bother to assess whether it was good-value-for-money compared to other cars, nor how much I might sell it for later. If I had the money available I'd simply enjoy it.

Bit of both:

There are certain things we're looking for:

Not too big; medium quick; fuel efficient; reliable; well built; reasonable costs; practical (5 doors); good headlamps ideally xenons (we do a lot of our driving on dark country roads).

Would like: Leather; good stereo with ipod or aux input; Good looks (which I know is down to the individual).

Most important has to have the certain something that gives you confidence to drive it, which the MKV has.

The MkVI has some downers for me: no Xenons is disappointing; I don't love the looks like I do the MKV(in fact I keep thinking of the Fiat Stylo when I see one); I'm concious of cost; the local dealers are pretty bad (and the one we bought from has failed) so we'll have to try find a new one.

The BM I'm looking at has a load of kit (to the tune that speccing the MKVI would be more than it) has had it's initial hit of depreciation. If it drives well and has good steering feel then I'll be sold. If it doesn't, then it's not for us and the Golf is a likely candiate.

Lots of interesting 'official' reading in the below link. Interestingly the engine appears to be a version of the ED30 / S3 engine and not the current MKV200ps one. I wonder if this means it will remap easily up to the 300ps mark (as apposed to the 240ps region of the standard MKV engine). Must say I'm dissapointed in the price - starting to look pretty expensive..

I noticed Xenons were missing as well but in the link above it says

The headlights swivel through a steering radius of up to 13 degrees to the outside and seven degrees to the inside. The styling of the headlights closely matches the GTI's sporty character. The interior dual modules (xenon outboard, parking light / turn signals inboard) each have a chrome pod through which a very impressive visual image projects. Placed low below the bumper – and also GTI-specific in design – are the vertically aligned and always standard front fog lights.

That's not unusal, RR, well I don't think it is as I do the same. If I want the car and I can afford to spec it how I want, then that's all the prompts I need +++

....Sounds like a poor translation - What are "always standard front fog lights"?

In my opinion the MKVI's styling is just a facelift not really a new model.

It doesn't really gel as well as the original MKV styling.

One of the reasons I bought the MKV was I loved it's chunky practical looks.

The transitition makes me think more some of the Passat's midlife facelifts.

Am I sensing a "not Thrilled" vibe on the boards about the MKVI?
