Been a busy day going round the stealers, playing one against the other. Best I could get was 10% off list(no trade-in), and free servicing for 3yrs. hoping the phone will ring tomorrow with some improvement on what has been offered.

Any chance as you have now done your deal that you could PM or email me the dealers details you have been dealing with please as im only south of the border and often up that way on buisness.

Im going to retest drive the mk6 again soon if it ever stops raining! and i think i may bite the bullet before the price rise/vat rise.

Thanks

Geoff.

That sounds quite good to me. Basically £2400 off the list price and about £500 worth of servicing. I don't think anyone got that on a mk5 through the dealers in it's early days.

11% icon12.gif Not quite as good as above but in 2005 the car was just over £20K and i got the basic spec as it had most of what i wanted back then. But times and my taste has changed slightly.

....I think that the bottom line is that it really doesn't matter how much you pay for a car if it's the one which excites your enthusiasm and as long as you have the money available (without being threatened with divorce etc!).

Personally, I don't understand those who don't buy a particular car just because it's more expensive than it should be (a subjective view) but in spite of the fact that they love it.

Of course the more a car costs, the more meerkat competition it has.

To those who might say I don't live in the real world, I would answer that my reality is in owning and enjoying that car.

I totally agree with you RedRobin. Unfortunately, it takes a personal tragedy for some to realise that life is short. Live for today, for who knows what tomorrow will bring.

I know what you mean about the R32, I was being offered peanuts for mine, even though the R32 market is fairly strong at the moment. I had a MKV GTi befor the R and really missed her. The R didn't quite do it for me thus the change back. Love your plate, well done.

I also had a mk5 gti before the R (gti got wrote off in the floods)

And also missed the Gti, the R soundtrack and grip was great but felt very heavy compared to the Gti, Gti a lot more nimble and felt a lot lighter, still both great cars thou

I'm interested in the new GTI, and have been looking at leasing deals on the internet. Does anyone know how they compare to the PCP deals you can get from a dealer? I haven't wanted to go down the route of getting involved with a dealer just yet, so wondered if anyone had any experience of this?

As an expample, I have specced up a GTI with the following spec:

Reflex Silver metallic

RCD 510

Xenon lights

18" Monza wheels

On a 3 year lease it's £1,500 down with monthly payments of £380.

Does that seem better or worse than a dealer would offer?

  • 2 weeks later...

These are all personal things and my own thoughts on the mk6 GTI,

Today i managed to get a lone of a GTI for a couple hours by myself and i think my views have changed with this extra time with it.

When i read in magazines about quality feel im not 100% sure what they meen. I must admit i have not been in our mk5 for a while and been using a mk1 leon or the mk2 GTI and the tactile feel of the mk6 golf buttons and knobs don't feel expensive, the plastics don't either and the plastic/glue smell the interior has is not nice. I guess you have to put up with recycling type plastic nowadays. Theres just not the tactile feel of the old Audi A3 dash/buttons the leon uses. I felt the leon buttons/switchgear felt more expensive. Don't get me wrong its well screwed together, went well, handled well, ride was ok, but the interior i feel is over hyped by magazines. I also did not find it as quiet as others have. I could easily hear the engine/exhaust for example.

The Monza Shadows feel more halfords and i much prefer the monza IIs of the mk5 must more classy in my view.

What spoils it for me is the daytime running lights on the halogen lights, they let the looks down imo and why so yellow. So making xenons at £1025 a must in my view (they also look great) or disable DRLs in VAGCOM.

I also reccomend anyone to see a car in the colour your thinking of getting as photos DON'T show the true colour and looks of the car at all imo. For example i got to see a carbon Gray and thought it was metallic black, but in photos it looks very gray. Also got to see a few other colours silver, white, red, black and non looked as they do in photos.

Would i buy one yesicon12.gif

I didn't like the old solid black colour (too wet/glossy appearance for my taste) and I'm finding the same with the new deep black pearl metallic (too glossy)

Bring back diamond black pearl !!

I'd be interested to know how the Monza Shadows are going down in the home market as it would be the first thing I'd have to get rid of (too tacky looking imo)

Have you wittled down your colour preference yet Geoff ?

Sort of. I did until this monday but i changed my mind then lol.

Black or Deep Black Pearl i rules out, too much hassle to keep clean/looking good. Also how other road users don't seem able to see dark colours.

Candy White i ruled out, hard to keep clean and mark free and im not a fan of it close up looks too chalky if you know what i meen, great from a distance or in photos though.

Tornado Red, Ruled out because i had from the age of birth drummed into me red=fire engine=dads work so reds not for me but it looks great in red.

Steel Gray looks good but too common and im not a gray person. Its also a colour very similar to road surfaces were i live and i have seen far too many near misses because the cars seem to be in stealth mode. I shocked myself more than once by nearly not seeing one in this colour.

Blue Graphite Pearl Have not been able to see a mk6 GTI in this colour yet so may change my mind on it but its too gray for me in certain lights on the mk5's i have seen or the standard mk6 i have got to see.

Carbon Gray This colour suprised me i expected not to like it at all, i do actually like it, totally different to every photo i have seen its very metallic more or less anthrosite(sp?) colour in some lights less gray more like black. In the end it came down to visability again but i can see why others would like it, also unique to the GTI. Really liked the 3 door i got to see in this colour.

Shadow Blue This was my first choice our mk5 GTI is this colour and i love the way it sparkles in the sun it simply make me go clean the car! but its very dark colour and at times this goes against it in modern traffic were people don't seem able to see you and pull out on you etc. The big advantage is with it been dark it hides little marks and paint touchups well unlike light colours like silver which simply show everything and amplify those imperfection. a plus is not many GTIs this colour out there but i don't think the red grill on the mk6 works in this colour at all, were as the mk5 GTI can get away with the colour clash with its very thin red line/black front end.

Reflex Silver That leaves me with only one choice lol. I currently have 2 silver cars and i always seem to fall back on this colour cool in summer and easy to clean/polish due to not getting hot. Also hides the dirt very well and i have enough cars to keep me cleaning on a regular basis lol. Its a bright colour so other road users see it coming or see it in front so hopefully don't rear end you. Not the best looking colour imo on the mk6 and it was the first colour i got to see a mk6 GTI in many months ago and rulled it out flat back then as dull and not shiny enough but its grown on me im still not a great fan of this shade of silver it does not have enough of a mirror finish etc. It also just does not work in photos at all. What i do wish is it was a shade with a bit more yellow in it, it actually looks great to me under showroom lights lol rather than in sunlight out on the street. So basically this ended up as a default colour more than anything else.

Interesting thoughts / feedback Geoff.

I've still not managed to drive one yet to be able to form a firm opinion. You mention the areas which you feel the motoring press have potentially 'over hyped' but these were supposed to be the improved areas on the MKV.

What do you believe to be the improvements are given that this is the newer model? I'm guessing there is 'something' there as you seem keen to progress with a purchase. :)

As a note I know if i was looking to change the mk5 i would not spend the extra its far too similar.

So i can see were mk5 owners come from on this.

I did look into another mk5 but the thought of slightly different but the same appealed.

There is some improvment in the mk6 to me and some that are not and thats the key.

Improvments on the mk6 im not a great fan of the mk5 dash it has too hard plastics in certain areas. I hate that grill on the top for example the mk6 dash itself the top of it is softer touch as is the top of the doors, i don't like the mk5's interior door panels look or layout the mk6 is much nicer. But things like the ashtray lid, aircon knobs/buttons don't feel as high a grade to me in the mk6. (I have been outside tonight, and sat/drove our mk5 to compare yes i know thats sad). Compared to our mk5 and the mk1 leon The mk6's buttons/knobs are more clicky, less precise, less direct, less defined, less soft touch, dare i say more calculator buttons than premium damped feeling. If you know what i meen. Some depending what they were operating were far better or worse than others too which is a bit odd. I don't have the steeringwheel buttons on our mk5 but the mk6 once were the worst ones in the car for feel.

I think the light grays of certain parts rather than black in the leon or older cars does not help the preception of quality to me personally either.

I like the new position of the window & mirror switches.

The blue dash lights after time hurts my eyes. So the white is a welcome improvment to me and i feel look better.

The seat material don't get me wrong i love the mk5's seats but the toned down less bright pattern on the mk6 i think looks better. I did not check how low the seat goes i know a few have comented on this as a problem but been a short ar$e i don't need it right down lol it was fine for me.

The centre concel been standard is better.

I think the mk6s blue display on the RCD310 looks silly when the rest of the dash lights are red/white which is a minus but standard ipod/usb is nice as is the big improvment in sound and speaker locations also the option of dynaudio at that price is great (especially when you think of the price of dynaudio speakers) for the average person.

On the road it seems harder ride but that could be simple down to its newer. There is much less road noise from the tyres and windows also from round the mirrors. I also seemed to get less thumps and bumps from the suspension.

The engine maybe slightly more quiet but im not sure if it is, i hear it fine most of the sounds on youtube are how i heard it. icon10.gif

I got slightly better mpg.

I also like how its engine is chain driven rather than a cambelt.

Cheaper to tax for long term ownership thanks to the robbing goverment so 170g is nice.

The exterior looks have grown on me alot seeing a mk5 GTI next to a mk6 GTI today proved that to me especially at the rear. I also like how it looks wider and lower but actually is not especially the look from the front.

I don't like the lack of a side rubbing strip but every car maker is doing this.

I may add more to this as i remember it. lol

Thanks Geoff, interesting findings.

I had a test drive in a 1.4 TSI Golf a few weeks ago now and the interior quality of the more basic spec models does feel a little more upmarket. Then again, the higher spec MKV's with full climate control and sat nat seemed to have a better look and feel about them than lesser models so maybe the improvements on the GTI are less apparent as the eye is drawn to the knobs and bells rather that plastics quality etc.

The mkvi gti has grown on me hugely but it doesn't seem to attract the initial rave reviews the MKV did. This makes the increased price a tough pill to swallow as for me a least, the MKV seemed pricey - all comparative I know. From how I see it at the moment (and I emphasise again that I haven't driven the new GTI version yet) I would probably only want it just because it's the latest version and I kind of want / need to see something a bit more for the money. Maybe the ed35 will hold that key?! Perhaps a test drive might sway my opinion as i'm still sat on the fence.

Thanks for your thoughts / comments +++

My view is as a sort of mk5 owner if you already have a mkV and don't need to change it for any reason for example maybe its on hire or a works car so you change it every 3 years for example then i would not bother with the new GTI. What may tempt GTI owners in the future is the R model if speed is there thing.

What did suprise me was how many my local dealer had sold in resent weeks and how many people on a thursday afternoon were queing to get a drive. They had even sold 2 in the time i was there! and had sold the two in the showroom earlier in the week. As i have 4 VW dealers in a 12 mile radius of me that suprised me. They do seem to be selling well up north, still yet to see one on the road though, guess everyone is waiting for 59 plates.

....That's how I feel too.

I'll translate "speed" as meaning performance and handling.

The expectation is that the R20Thingy will be more of an enthusiast's car. We live in hope (though I will probably still keep my beloved much modded Mk5 GTI as I enjoy it so much).

These photos are probably the best representation of what carbon gray actually looks like that i have seen so far

Carbon grey 5dr Interlagos here at last (more pix)

I don't know if they will do much to the handling for the R myself its not like VW to do a focus RS type car from history. The Scirocco R should give us some clues to what the Golf R will be like when it arrives.

....Which sadly tells me that the Golf R will probably benefit from modding. That could get extremely expensive because I'm sure the factory R won't be cheap!

The problem is that they have to tread a fine line between what a small minority of hard core enthusiasts like yourself want and what the motoring press will like and not slate.

In this day and age the motoring press can make or break a model, they have a huge impact on sales. I find this extremely sad myself that people even listen to the press and don't make there own mind up but thats the way it is sadly.

As for my colour choice of the mk6 GTI i so wish they made a light blue like the scirocco has or the car from paris was that would have been my choice.
