How fast?!

Speed tests can be very unreliable. Have a look at the config of your cable modem (http://192.168.100.1/CmOpConfig.asp) and see what that says. The username and password are both root.

Where abouts are you? I know VM are trialling 50Mbit in parts of Kent but to be on that trial you would have had to have a new modem installed as the 50Mbit service uses DOCSIS 3.0 as opposed to DOCSIS 2.0 which only supports 43ish Mbit or just over 53Mbit with EuroDOCSIS 2.0.

I did wonder, for an instant, if VM had upgraded me, but I don't think they have.

Motorola Surfboard SB5100 Cable Modem

One of Motorola’s most popular cable modems, the SB5100 supports both DOCSIS 2.0 and 1.1, and is compatible with Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me, NT, XP along with other operating systems such as Mac OS, Linux and Unix.

The SB5100 cable modem includes the following features:

* Capable of handling data transfer rates as high as 30 Mbps--3 times faster than earlier models.

* Built in HTML-based diagnostic tools designed to assist with troubleshooting any connectivity problems.

* Ethernet and USB connectivity.

* Stand-by button allows users to disengage the cable broadband network without removing the cables.

I remember there being something in the modem log that indicates the service you're on, but I can't remember where/what it is. Any help?
