RobK
Does anyone use homeplug devices for networking? I want to get some to connect a PC in my garage but I'm not sure whether to get the 85mbps or 200mbps versions. What sort of file transfer speeds can you get from these? simkna
I use some of the 200mb/s ones from Devolo. In testing copying files, they aren't quite as fast as a 100mb/s direct network connection, but p1ss all over wifi. Depends what you will be using them for, really. I would always run a CAT5 cable if I could, but if that's not an option, then the homeplugs are great. Si.
Mac
What about 802.11n? Extended range and great throughput too Just make sure you get something that's upgradable.
burble
I use them to connect the XBox 360 and Slingbox to the network. They do the job pretty well. Throughput is nowhere near the 200Mbit they promise but then I knew that before I bought them but for the way I use them it isn't a problem. sitas3
the performance of the homeplugs will depend largely on the age/condition of the house's wiring circuit. I've heard that good performance can be obtained from these with modern wiring.
shark_90
Indeed.. I bought some 85Mbps ones and I presume my home wiring is rubbish because it couldn't even manage more than 3-4 pings before dropping one or two!
cruiser647
Some of our reps use these. Those that live in bigger, older houses or barn conversion type things where the walls and distances are just too great for a wi-fi signal. They seem happy with them, but as said before - if the home wiring is good, then you'llbe OK speed wise.
craigyb
Now maybe I don't get this, but I always thought the bottleneck was the slowest part of any chain. So these 200mb/s connectors have 100mb/s LAN connections. How does that work then? For example 1GB lan <> 100Mb socket < 200Mb powerline> 100Mb socket <> 1Gb PC card. Surely I'm losing all my bandwidth at the 100Mb ports?
shark_90
If it's a 100Mb ethernet socket then yes.. although the 200Mb claimed speed is bobbins really.. in the same way that 54g wireless will never give you 54Mbps transfer throughput. RobK
Thanks all. I would really prefer to use a proper cable but the garage is detached so I don't know how easy that would be, plus the router is upstairs at the other side of the house. The house is only 7 years old so hopefully the wiring should be decent (better that the plumbing I hope!) I'll be using it to connect a couple of server boxes so I think I'll get the 200mbps ones and hope to get about 30-40mbps real transfer speed. Now I just need to decide which ones to get. All the reviews seem to have a different best buy!
simkna
I went for the Devolo ones after seeing them recommended on other TSN threads - haven't been disappointed so far. Si.
RobK
I was all set to buy the Devolo ones until I saw this review saying that the Solwise ones were 3 times quicker. Then I saw another review saying the Solwise ones are slow. Sigh...
burble
Something you need to consider is will the adapters be on the same mains ring? Some adapters will work cross circuit albeit with degraded or possibly severely degraded performance whereas others won't work at all.
RobK
Actually I think I've had a better idea - put the servers in the loft and drop a CAT5 cable down to the router. Which just leaves the problem of how I get power sockets put in the loft!
