JD_55
I just bought an A6 3year old final edition. The sat nav worked great in Devon, usually displayed 4 or 5 available satellites. Now I'm home in Cumbria it can't find any satellites at all. I can set the position manually but there's a new road between me and the motorway and every time I go to the motorway it loses its position completely. Anything I can do about this? Thanks in advance.
PetrolDave
Sounds like either the cable to the sat nav antenna (in the sharkfin) has broken or become disconnected (driven along any rough roads?) or the antenna has broken.
JD_55
Thanks, I have driven over several rough roads. But I guess I'll live without it until the next service.
PetrolDave
But I guess I'll live without it until the next service. I'd be lost, literally and metaphorically, without my sat nav! I even have a backup -TomTom Navigator 6 on my phone!
craigyb
The A6 is well known for the broken GPS antennas. Final editions like all A6's came with the triplex bee sting antenna GSM/GPS/FM combined. My own RS6 came with a defective antenna, trying to prove it to the dealer was another matter though. JD_55
The FM is definitely working, and the GPS was working last week in Devon, no longer, sadly. Dunno about the GSM.
PetrolDave
The FM is definitely working, and the GPS was working last week in Devon, no longer, sadly. Dunno about the GSM. There are three separate antennas in the bee sting and they don't usually all fail together. However, you can only replace them as a complete package! nicknick
Is it under warranty ? - if not then you could get a GPS antenna from ebay for less than £10 and plug that in to the Sat nav direct and bypass the roof monuted one. That would prove the issue or not - before you (if you decide to ) shell out for a new roof mounted aerial. Or you could also live with the ebay antenae and do what most after market Audi SAT nav installs do and put the antenae above the dashpod (you remove the speedo and put the antenae in behind - no wires visible). Dead easy to do and the antenae gets full view to the stars through the window.
craigyb
Thats what I did with mine when it arrived with a faulty GPS, used a puck until I could get it to the dealers under warranty. it confused the service bloke as I disconnected it when I got there and of course the position was correct and he said it wasn't faulty. JD_55
It's not under warranty I don't normally attempt to do maintenance myself but I have bought an antenna off ebay for £9.99 because I thought what have I got to lose. Now I only have to figure out how to connect it...
PetrolDave
Now I only have to figure out how to connect it... Slide out the sat nav (you need 4 of the Audi style removal keys), the GPS antenna connector is the single Fakra connector on the rear of the sat nav, above the main connector block.
