Andrew
Always thought I might buy a 40D for my big holiday next year and now I note the 50D is out in October. When will things stabilise in the camera world? It is like buying a computer. TVs and Hi-Fis don't change too much these days (I don't think) so there must be a levelling off of the technology curve eventually.
Sponge
If you don't need a camera until next year, then it might be worth waiting to see what happens to the prices. Even if you don't go for/can't afford the 50D, the 40D might have come down in price by then. Don't forget though, the 40D has £60 cashback at the moment. Dispite the above advice, I'm an impatient so-and-so and have to admit, I've just bought a 40D. It came yesterday and I've been out with it this afternoon. I'm well happy with it. I'm going to a wedding in a couple of weeks and wanted it for then. I've upgraded from a 350D (which I sold to fund the new camera) and it's a totally different beast. I never felt at home with the relatively small size of the 350D and the 40D feels so much better. Although my wife was a little put off initially, I think she's getting used to it. Oooerr, missus. CarMad
It's a bit like the PC industry but with a difference, the lenses don't need to change or most of them don't. I've got a 40D and I won't be moving bodies for a good while to come. Its the glass thats the good bit. I need to buy far more lenses to even get close to the abilities of a 40D and mine for that matter. Some are obsessed with the latest body and constantly moving forwards, but its really not what its all about. Plus I think the 50D is almost twice the price of the 40D. Personally I'd get a 40D and treat yourself to some nice lenses.
Sponge
The reports I've been reading have put the 50D anywhere from £999 to £1999. The 40D, body only (which is what I got), can be found for £587 excluding the £60 cashback. Like CarMad said, the 40D is a serious camera and I can't (at the moment) envisage me changing it anytime soon. However, some serious money can now be spent on lenses. :smashfreak: I bought mine from Amazon. It's my understanding that they have a 30 day price promise. So if the 40D comes down in price as the release date of the 50D gets closer, then I plan to submit a claim. As far as the release date of the 50D, again, the reports I've been reading vary. Some say this month, some say next. Edited September 13, 2008 by Sponge

bazza_g
I'm now researching extra batteries... ....and battery grips? I've had my 40d from launch and won't be changing it in the near future - as said above, more lenses and more practice is the way to go
crasher
I've had my 30d for some years now (and extremely happy with it) and had been putting some funds aside for a future body upgrade as i have most of the lenses that i'm likely to need for my needs. For the last 18 months or so I had been eying the 5d, but with these recent announcements who's to say they wont also been putting out a 5d replacement, sending the 5d prices lower... (I'm assuming the 50d is stepping up fromt the 40d, rather than replacing the 5d?? - not read the specs yet). Oh the choice. Oh the money!! Andrew
I'd assume the 5D is the next to be upgraded as it has some pretty old (relatively) technology on it.
Andrew
I note that the 50D is now £840 on Amazon, down from £1200 two/three weeks ago!
