Internet Explorer 7 - very slow - what next?

I don't know what to do now.

It takes approximately 10 seconds to load up pages. I have cleaned my registry (used CCleaner free download), ran Mcafee virus scan, defragged the hard drive. I've even tried turning back to a restore point. Nothing has improved the situation and nothing dodgy found.

What else should I consider? It's not my ISP as my works laptop is fine.

I'm not the most techy person but I will have a go if anyone got any suggestions. :)

Check the cache settings on IE, I think its set to check for new files each time and in doing so can slow things down, your other machine might not be set that way.

Personally I find Firefox 3 far faster than IE7, more stable and uses less memory and generally feels better to me to use, especially with the RSS feeds in the toolbar. +++

Saying that it's going faster as the evening goes on is the obvious give away. Who is your ISP? A lot of service providers "Throttle" back the connection speeds of their lines to cope with the extra demand put on their servers in the evening when everyone is using the internet. So thus you will get a slower browsing experience.

I was with BT, who are horrific for throttling. They were throttling back my normally 6mb connection to around 2.8mb at peak times. Which is a scandal.

Companies like ADSL24 Broadband - Home DO NOT throttle their connections, so you get max speed at all times. I've been with these guys for over 12 months and compared to BT are an absolute dream. I've just changed to 02 Broadband however as I can get an 8mb line for £7.50 a month because i'm a pay monthly customer. And so far has been better than the other one!

Check DSL ZoneUK - ISP ratings and reviews to see where your ISP is rated. Then change if you can.

EDIT: Give Google Chrome a go, this paired with Vista has given me one of the smoothest and fastest browsing experiences ever.

Before you go loading extra browsers on your computer, what Anti Virus and Anti Spam software are you using?

Kaspersky takes forever to let pages load up - you have to disable a couple of features on it to get it to work properly with IE7 on Vista.

He's using McAfee. When I come to think of it, McAfee did slow down one of my older computers so I got rid of it. Best thing I ever did, it's so intrusive when all you want to do is use the computer.

NOD32 has been the best one for me, so easy to use and doesn't slow down your computer or give you warning messages every 3 seconds. It's free aswell!

Been using NOD for a couple of years and am very happy. If you can show me where to get a free (legit) copy I'd be over the moon!

Thanks for your help folks - yes i'm with BT and this may well be part of the issue. I often work from home connected to the office VPN on my works laptop and at times it does seem extremely slow. I am also using McAfee which I do plan to get rid of in due course. It has caused me numerous issues in the past and is probably not helping things.

I have removed the phishing filter and this does make a noticeable improvement.

Thanks again +++

IE isn't set up to access t'Internet via your VPN is it? If you're connecting to the office via a VPN, have you got a proxy server in the office configured in IE? That may be another cause of your problems - IE using a proxy server in the office so all requests go via the VPN over t'Internet, out from your office router, back into your office router and then back down the VPN to you (if you see what I mean).
