andylister
Hi I have a W reg Golf GTI 1.8turbo with 130,000 miles on it. It is overheating. First noticed that it was warming up quicker than normal. It now overheats and warning sound/lights go off. Stood idling, no problems, it idles at normal temperature and fans cut in as expected, top hose to radiator is hot and bottom hose is warm, heater working fine. After around 10 to 15 minutes of normal driving it starts to overheat, putting on heater and slowing down brings temperature down to normal, but it then starts to overheat a short time after you start to drive normally again. The harder the engine is worked the more it overheats. If you stop, but leave engine idling temperature returns to normal within 1 minute. It seems to be using a little water. If you drive with revs below 2500rpm temperature stays normal for much longer and only goes up when revs start to rise a little or engine is worked harder such as going up hills. Pressure in overflow bottle seems normal. Car drives normally even when overheated, no apparent loss of power or performance. Any thoughts! steve2
it sounds like the water pump impellor is seperated from the shaft, your symptoms are exactly what happened to mine
shark_90
Welcome to TSN Most definitely the water pump impellor has sheared off the pump shaft. The pumps on the 1.8T had plastic impellors, the replacement parts are metal thankfully. Sorry, but it's not a small job. The cost is pretty much the same as a cam belt change as it involves most of the same job. Best of luck
shark_90
Oh and by the way.. I'd get it sorted out immediately as overheating can cause some major lasting damage and putting it off will only end up costing you more £££
andylister
Thanks for the replies. I'll get the water pump replaced asap.
