Tipex
If it's black smoke then it's over fueling, has the car been chipped/mapped or anything? Do you notice the smoke in the daylight or just at night in other peoples headlights?
cruiser647
I only notice my smoke at night in other peoples headlights. However, I did see a Golf TDi making rapid progress - but also making enough smoke to hide Britain's WW I Grand Fleet. So presumed it had been chipped. Badly??? mucker27
thanks for replying yes it only see it at night not aware of any chipping on car , is their any chance it could be a filter ???
Tipex
Without wanting to sound patronising, there's probably nothing wrong with it, People who aren't used to diesels always say they smoke a lot but can only see it at night in other peoples headlights. It's perfectly normal for a car of that age, with the newer Euro4 emissions vehicles with particulate filters, there is a lot less smoke, but you still see it at night. A good Italian tune up every now and again does help blow the soot out and reduce the smoke a bit.
mucker27
totally agree with u but having owned 2 passat diesels in the past it seems rather excessive to me if i were to describe it ( a bit like a smoke screen comes to mind )
shark_90
Is it down on power would you say? It could be a boost leak which would give the car similar symptoms to overfueling.
cruiser647
Dirty/fouled injectors?
Tipex
I'd agree with Shark then in that case. Check all the air hoses and connections very carefully, if possible, remove and inspect them, as it's possible for leaks to only show themselves once the system is pressurised by the turbo, as they can then close up again once boost pressure is removed. I wouldn't have thought it'd be the injectors as I think you'd notice poor/rough running, and the piezo injectors are very reliable on the PD engine.
