Worried of Bucks
My A4 (tiptronic) has developed an intermittent fault. Every couple of days it wont start. Turn the ignition and absolutely nothing happens although the electrics function. After a few goes, getting out and having a coffee, magically it changes its mind and starts, no problem. On one occasion the auto gearstick jammed (engine running but couldn't press in the button on the side) Darent go more than a few miles in case I can't get back. Local (non franchise) garage baffled. Help!!
PetrolDave
Starter inhibitor switch faulty - the one that only allows you to start when in neutral?
Worried of Bucks
Starter inhibitor switch faulty - the one that only allows you to start when in neutral? Is that related to the starter motor as I've got a relatively new one?
BW2309
It's going to be either the inhibitor switch as suggested, this won't let the car crank, or also check the brake light switch as it can have the same effect. These are a common failure and would also possibly explain why it once locked in gear. It needs a foot on the pedal to get out of Park or Neutral. Even if the brake lights come on, it doesn't mean the switch is ok, the switch has 2 internal circuits, 1 for the lights and the other one for the various ECU's that need it's signal. Get a fault check done. Look in brakes (adress 03), engine (adress 01) and instruments (address 17). The fault may appear in one or all of these ECU's. PetrolDave
Is that related to the starter motor as I've got a relatively new one? It's not part of the starter motor - it's part of the gear selector assembly.
