TheVon
My title says it all! I am thinking of an used S5, but the more I look, the more I think I should go for the new M3, or even a 335 ci. On my opinion Audi is more beautiful, but performancewise, cost and price.... Doesn't it all favor BMW? I have always been an Audi fan, but now I am confused...
Scotty
It's easy. Test drive both and choose the one you prefer
Booster
Test drive a 3.0TDi and you may be pleasantly surprised. I was totally against diesel until I drove one and was turned to the darkside immediately:grin:
TheVon
You're right, but . . . Can anyone give me his personal experience and thoughts? Booster, I actually am concidering the diesel also (for the low consumption), but on the other hand, my annual mileage is low, so fuel consumption isn't that important. ...as you can see, I am very indecisive. Merlot
I've not driven either but own an S4 with a very similar V8 engine. I've owned the new M3 and was disappointed and would think that the 335i would be better with lots more low end torque. Personally I missed 4WD and am now back in a quattro. FWIW the 3.0tdi A5 will drive more like your S3 than an S5 will but both will offer a much stronger quattro feel than any S3 with its different (word chosen carefully) 'quattro' system. As Scotty says, go drive but the winter is not the time to jump fron 4WD to RWD IMHO.
Scotty
I did test drive the S5 and it's very nice....as a sport-tourer. If felt to me quite a lot softer than my S4 and it felt heavy. Even with the new rear biased power I felt it understeered more than my S4. These thoughts could be because my S4 has the RS4 ARB and it's tuned up and hence is more urgent but that's my feeling on it. To my mind if you want a nice environment and a car that's gonna be usable in all conditions and get you A to B fast and without fuss then the S5 wins. If you're after something that's lively and more rewarding then it's the M3. To be honest since they're now putting a different engine in the S4 cab, I can't see it'll be long until the saloon goes the same way. So if you want a V8 S4 then act now. If you wan't the fuel savings and (I believe) improved performance then maybe hang on until the put the V6 in. I also tested the diesel. It didn't have the sports suspension and hence it gelt very soft to me. Perhaps with it tricked up then it could be a good goer ... but I just don't like diesels. tone
After test driving the new M3 and listening to that clonking from the transmission through the manual gear box at every gear change and then test driving the new S5 I rushed to my Audi dealer in January with cheque book in hand. My Phantom black beauty with the special option 20" 7 twin spoke alloys was delivered 3 months later. I haven't looked back since but many a wide eyed admirer has! I can assure you you don't and won't get that sought of admiration from other drivers and passers by driving an M3. And I saved 10k !

micalee
I drove a 3.0TDI Manual a while ago and was really surprised how quick it was. As for the rest of the comparisons, I can't comment. Compare the figures with the S5 on performance: S5 Quattro 2d 0-60 4.9 s Top Speed 155 mph Power 349 bhp 3.0 TDI Quattro 2d 0-60 5.7 s Top Speed 155 mph Power 236 bhp Edited May 14, 2009 by micalee

I drove a V8 S5 manual this afternoon and was impressed as always with the ride comfort, silence and finish of the Audi. It still has the classic Audi numb steering, and the engine note is very subdued. If you want a GT that has the performance for the odd fast thrash, but mainly a refined cruiser - it is your car. If you want something agile and quick, go the S3 (and do an APR stage 1 ECU remap), or a MkIV .:R32 or as you mention - the M3.
