flippy_tv
Having a pain problem after change timing-belt, water pump, air-filter on my S3 8L AMK. the symptom pretty weird, idle rpm goes between 1k or drop to 300 rpm (almost dead). feel very jerky when accelerate to 3k , can't accelerate when reaching 4-5k. When we try to un-plug the MAF sensor and car can accelerate smooth as usual except 2 light on dash come up (engine & ESP) My Garage think MAF sensor might dead which i see most people had the same problem by reading the forum. Have try 2 different brand new MAF sensor change but problem still exist, then try change coil pack but nothing help. try Vag-com to see any DTC, see nothing come up special except below 1 Fault Found: 16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too Low P0102 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent Readiness: 0010 0101 This DTC show when car in MAF sensor un-plug condition which we think is normal. It show no error when we plug MAF sensor back. The car was Revo stage 1 tuned in previous owner before my hand and pretty much are standard without other modify (engine part) . Any suggestion or advise are deeply appreciated and welcome, hope can be a hints for us to trace what problem it is now. Currently i force to un-plug the MAF sensor when using the car but scaring it can't use in long run as ECU can't reading any air-flow figure that might harmful the engine if keeping for long without fixing. jamieg
From information gleaned if you unplug your MAF and all is good then it's the MAF, however don't replace with patterned parts get the audi ones as the patterned parts could be no better than your faulty one, trust me I've been there to my cost, you will find your local audi stealer will sell you one for around £80 + your old one in part exchange, normal price form what I've seen is around £200. Good luck
Mollox
Flippy, sounds like you might have more than one problem... MAF Sensor error indicates a....MAF problem! But don't discount issues with hoses. The S3 has lots of them and they can have a dramatic impact on the car's performance. Remapped S3's run considerably more boost than standard and any holes, loose-fitting hoses or other boost leaks can lead to the symptoms you describe. Specifically, are you saying the car reaches around 5k rpm and then can't accelerate past that? What happens if you try the same but not with your foot right down? Try it on a part-throttle and then try the same in 2nd gear. If it accelerates through the rev range on a part throttle or in the lower gears, it sounds like you might have the famous "collapsing hose" issue. This happens when the main silicone (the widest black one feeding the turbo) hose gets sucked shut under heavy load, starving the engine of air. Solution is simple - inserting a 1.5 or 2in section of exhause pipe into the hose (it rests against a sensor somewhere, don't worry) to keep it open under boost. OR a reinforced hose kit such as SAMCO. Good luck
flippy_tv
Seems i found out the roof cause is that intake hose connect between air-filter to Turbo has leaking / hole . Just grab a Samco hose replacement (Original one wasn't cheap anyway) and see the problem gone, but funny is now i don't feel any turbo, you guys know any Vag-com way i can capture to see turbo problem or not ? Mollox
Seems I was pretty close in my diagnosis What do you mean "feel" the turbo? On VAG-Com I believe you can measure Requested Boost vs Actual Boost which sounds like a good start. Unless it was VAG-Check, I can't remember... flippy_tv
Mollox, You definitely my guru Sorry for my terrible English, my meaning about turbo is the car run very smooth and good on accelerate except didn't feel the boost punchy like it used to on about 3000 rpm. sometime i feel a tiny boost on 4000 rpm now (so weird) I also did a Throttle Body Alignment to ensure ECU learn its new figure becoz i been swap old and new MAF before (just for safe). As you mentioned about Requested Boost vs Actual Boost , i just did a search from ross-tech website but didn't see any hints. do you know any link i can refer to ? Thanks in-advance. Any chance of a pic to show which hose this is please flippy? - may car has been a ****** for a while with same sort of problems, booked into a performance specialist in two weeks time which has rolling road to diagnose/fix - I'm getting no CEL lights though. flippy_tv
Sorry that i didn't take any pic when the hose damage, here is the pic i can show i cap from ETKA (see red arrow) is the hose i am using, they have 2 version of intake hose which has ESP or no ESP. my car has ESP so that is the one . The reason i know is leaking is when i shake my hose while engine on, the car goes break immedietely. so i ask my garage took it off and detail check and we find some damage on the side close to the turbo. like i said on top, i replace the samco / forge instead buying OE becoz OE wasn't cheap. Hose i replaced, said for TT, but was 100% fine for my S3 (with ESP) http://www.samcosport.com/uk/prod/car_kits/big/images/TB1007.jpg Hope can help .. take good care. Paul
Jamie, loads of pictures here... http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/audi-a3-s3-cabrio/24729-uprated-hoses-s3-large-pics-warning.html The turbo intake pipe above, is one of the least likely to cause you a boost leak problem, as its not under pressure, its under vacuum, ie fresh air being sucked into the turbo. that said, the branch shown with a 10p in the split on my pipe is the outlet from the Diverter valve, back to the turbo. This air, has already been "measured" by the MAF, and is accounted for, in the ecu, so to loose it, through a split, could cause problems, the same as a Dump valve, would blasting it to atmosphere.
