A6 loss of power/cam belt slipped?

Hi.

Im new to this forum, having purchased my first Audi a few weeks ago.:)

We have an Aud A6 52 plate - 2.5TDi

I had just filled the tank up with fuel (def Desiel as we checked the receipt). then drove it about 1-2 miles, left a round-about and went up a hill, suddenly the car was unrepsonsive, chugged a few yards and stopped. Wouldnt start.. but kept trying then it started(ish )sounded awful and chuggy/rattley then conked out again, and thats all it does.

We had it picked up by RAC and took it to a garage. They plugged a diagnostics in and no elec fault found. Mechanic is saying it could have slipped a cambelt tooth. It runs but sounds sick. I have called the fuel station to check they have no problems reported with their Fuel, they say no.

Any ideas?

If the cambelt has slipped is going to very costly? Is it goodbye engine?

Shame your first post is about a problem.

Could be the dreaded fuel pump. The 2.5 TDi is notorious for these stopping working.

Costs about £1K+ for a replacement............

How many miles has the car done? The belt should be replaced every 60K or 80K miles.

Is it manual auto ir CVT?

It has done 102k and had the belt changed at the correct time (think thats about 70-80ish?) SO has had one.

The garage have got back to us and the belt is in tact, so they are carrying out a pressure test to see if a piston has blown. I wouldnt think it should have with the current milage should it? Not if the car has been maintained/oil levels etc.

Also, it is an auto.

It doesnt even seem to be 'safety mode' as they still go when they are in that mode dont they? My car just about ticks over, the revs do not go up or down.

Im so gutted.

Hi

Just a quick update... we now know the problem. One of the sets of twin cams decided to basically explode. Sheding many teeth, which have more than likely gone into the sump. To be on the safe side we will also need to replace the other set of twin cams as they are likely to also need replacing. What with the damage due to the sump/engine in general we have two otptions 1. look for a second hand engine (not easy, but have the prospect of the same unforunate thing happening to that one!) or 2. Have ours rebuilt. We have decided to have ours re-built as it is going to be the safest option, but more costly unfortunatly. We have been quoted £1,900 - Eeeekkk! You win some you lose some....

That is very unusual for that to have happened.

Does the mechanic have any ideas as to why/how that could have happened?

Was the cambelt put on correctly at the last change? Could it have been overly tight and put strain on the cams?

Have a look in the service history and check if the cams have every been replaced?

Well, the guy recons its because the car has had either a poor serivce or inadequate oil basically. Which is anoying as the car came with full Audi and Audi specialist service history.

I have it all booked in with a repair service now, have been told it should be a 4-5 day turn around, collect/return the car, re-build my engine, comes with a 1 year warantee - so will give me some peice of mind. I think we made the better choice rather than spending less and buying a second hand engine.

Well, the guy recons its because the car has had either a poor serivce or inadequate oil basically. Which is anoying as the car came with full Audi and Audi specialist service history.

I have it all booked in with a repair service now, have been told it should be a 4-5 day turn around, collect/return the car, re-build my engine, comes with a 1 year warantee - so will give me some peice of mind. I think we made the better choice rather than spending less and buying a second hand engine.

Possibley the wrong oil (which may happen a lot as many people don't realise VW diesel oils have their own specs and standards) or maybe over tightened bolts holding stuff on.

Either way, it's major £££ and a PITA for you.

If you PM 'Opieoils', they might be able to tell you a bit more as to what and why putting in the wrong oil does.

It could be the oil but I doubt it, its often the first thing to be blamed for many things (BMW are famous for it).

Trouble is, unless you know what oil was in there you just aint going to know.

Yes, thats a fare enough point. Its happened, there is nothing I can do to change it. But I guess having a reason makes it easier... Something must have caused it though, I cant see how it can just go. But at least I am having the engine re-built so it will be good as new.
