97 S8 Oil Cooler Issue...

Hi There, been lurking in the bckground since picking myself up "the Beast" s the other half calls it. Anyway, purpose of the post. Oil in the expansion bottle and external oil leak. Its been diagnosed as the oil cooler.Thankfully its not the head gasket!! Anyway, a replacement oil cooler is a tad pricey at £600 plus labour. I can apparently get a new seal and gasket kit for around £7 however I've been warned that the oil cooler may have warped hence the leak and that the kit may not resolve the problem.

Does anyone have experience of same or similar issue? Is it possible to fit an aftermarket oil cooling unit and plumb it in? Any advice/ directiopn appreciated.

Hi Bru Guy,

I had a issue with the oil cooler although it was different to yours. It manifested as a mysterious coolant leak which could not be traced, turned out to be the plastic connecting pipe between oil cooler and engine block. Dean Hill of 4 Rings ordered a new oil cooler from Audi, price £94.42 before VAT for the oil cooler block (Audi wont sell just the plastic pipe & seals on its own, shame). Total cost including 5 hours labour & new seals was £372.

I dont know who quoted you £600, was that just for the oil cooler block or is there some other part included in that price that needs to be replaced as well? my suggestion would be to go to a good independent mechanic to confirm, and if it really is £600 for those parts try A8pars as PsYcHe suggested.

See the last entry on this post, contact the guy there, this normally fixes the problem:

Cheers Dalep. I noted that was in reference to a D3. You wouldnt happen to know if its a generic part?

Goz - The scary £600 figure came from reputable Audi specialist. I'm interested to hear the oil cooler block only cost yourself £94. I have a z

scematic for it so will make further enquiries.

Cheers
