18''mags on an '02 golf,still driveable or 17'' better

hey, I'm trying to have some input on which is better. I'm not looking at having a show car and we have poor roads in Quebec which means I don't want to be changing tires weekly. I have a really good deal on 18'' Enkeis' for 400$the set with tires ( good friend of mine) but wanted to know if better with 17'', has anyone done the switch on that generation golf?? Thanks!
