bugsland
Hi, I just bought a new A3 cabriolet with the DVD sat nav, phone preparation with bluetooth and the multi function steering wheel. I tried a similar spec car a few months ago and I could use an option on the steering wheel "speech" to call people on my phone directory just by saying something out loud like "dial John Smith". It worked very well... Now on my car, I have that "speech" button on the steering wheel but nothing happens when I press it! I looked in the manual and it just says to press it to use it... I called my audi dealer asking if I have forgotten an option when ordering the car!!?!!? and he replied confused that: - He cannot see a specific option for the "speech" function - I may have tried an older A3 model which had the option and that they now stopped offering that option. - Audi uses the same steering wheel on the A3 that the ones from the A4, etc... so those options may only be available to different model of cars. Great... now, this is what I wonder: - I thought there was only one model of Audi A3 cabriolet... it came in summer 2008 and although I have a brand new A3, it is still an A3 2008 model, unless there is already a 2009 model?? - I tried an A3 cabriolet with that speech option only a few month ago, it was there and working - It is still listed as an option on the A3 manual... so that option should still be there for the A3. - Why would you use a steering wheel with options you could not just get for that car!?!?!? sounds cheap and wrong... I like that new car... but that sounds to me as a really bad salesman excuse. I have pushed for that dealership to investigate further and they will get back to me shortly. I would however like to know if anyone knows about this and if it sounds right? Cheers, S.
Booster
Welcome to Tyresmoke+++ Re the speech button, do you get any response from the car at all when you press the button? The car should say "say a command" if you have the option fitted.
shark_90
The bluetooth module could be incorrectly coded, craigyb will correct me if I'm wrong but all Bluetooth modules on the A3 should be able to do voice dialling.
craigyb
It is not incorrectly coded, it is infact disabled from the factory in every cabriolet. Audi do not seem to think that it works in a soft top So recoding will enable it.
bugsland
Thanks for the comments. Nothing happens when I press that button. That's weird they disable it by default, because the demo car I tried had it enabled... I wonder what the Audi salesman is going to tell me tomorrow!! Are you saying that on the A3 cabriolet, Audi decides not to enable that option?! Can I get my audi garage to enable it? Can you please tell me what you mean by recoding? who can do that? how much would that cost? Cheers, S
Dave
When i push my 'speech' button i get a tone.. then speak "navigation" for example and it changes it over. The phone is a bit of a pain. I have nokia phone and you have to read the name the same way the phone pronounces it .. if that makes sense. My Nokia E71 will pronounce surnames emphasising a different accent.. I have to copy that to make it dial... I actaully find it easier to use the dial & directory.
craigyb
All cabby's are disabled from the factory, if it worked in a demo, it may have been enabled. Anyone with VAG COM can enable it. Where are you located? Thanks for the comments.Nothing happens when I press that button. That's weird they disable it by default, because the demo car I tried had it enabled... bugsland
Thanks all for all this information! My Audi garage called me today to tell me this option was not available for the Audi A3 cabriolet. I then told the guy I went onto some forums and I was told if I had bluetooth installed then that option was *also* installed but not enabled. All it required was some "recoding". The guy I had on the phone didn't know that and contacted his technical departement... a few minutes later one of their technical guy called asking me when I wanted to bring the car in so they can enable the option! So without the info you guys told me I would not have pushed for that option to be enabled. Thanks a lot!!!
