Big Change In Life - Need Guidence....

I've been married to a South African Girl for nearly 9 months now, (she's been my best friend for over 10 years though) and we have the opportunity to go back and Live in SA (near Durban), rent free in an amazing house for at least the next 2 years.

It's something that we have both wanted to do for ages so this is an opportunity that we can't let slip by and are planning to move in about 6 months.

My wife is South African by birth and held a SA passport untill 1999 when she became a british citizen. She is also a vet so should have no issues I don't think with getting / being allowed to work back in SA.

BUT does anyone know what the regulations are for me? I have been doing research on work Permits in SA and they seem incredibly strict on anyone coming in and getting jobs.

Will it help at all that I am married to an SA born citizen?

Do I have to apply for the permit here in the UK before moving?

Do I need a job lined up in SA before I move?

What's the maximum lengh of time I can stay in SA if I am not working?

Basically if anyone can shed some light on the procedures and pitfalls it would be HUGELY appreciated. May even be worth some cheesy poofs.....:cartman:

I think your mrs will be classed as a skilled worker and you would go as a dependent. You will be allowed to work if she is. It may help that she was born there but because she is a British citizen you may find you both have to start from square 1. As above if one of you is classed as a skilled worker it shouldn't be too much bother. One of you may need a job offer before you make the move though.

As TDK says give the embassy/consulate a ring.
