mack324
Hi all, New here, hello everyone Ok, I have A8 3.7 V8 1998 I was driving it the other day, car stalled, restarted it, noticed funny noise. Parked it up, checked underneath, found oil seeping from between engine and gearbox, smelt like crayon (wax, crayolas) Anyone have any ideas. Much appreciated mack
A8_Tony
Welcome to the forum mack My guess would be that the seal between gearbox and engine has gone. Must admit I've not heard of them going, but anything is feasible. Hopefully BW2309 will be along soon to offer his thoughts, if not PM him and ask his advice. He's the A8OC preferred mechanic(runs his own business AVP, and I can assure you that you'll not be disappointed with his service. Add into that, the fact that A8OC members get a 15% discount on parts and labour, and you'll find that he really does offer value for money, and a superb quality of service to boot

Nero
On most cars it requires the gearbox or the engine removed its not a hard job but its a big time consuming one. Although I'd talk to whoever does these regulary.
Figure11
3 ways to do this: Take the Gearbox out of the car, Take the engine out of the car, take both the engine and gearbox out and then split them. For the first one you'll have to have a ramp and a mate called superman. Second one can be done without a ramp but you will need a hoist and a mate called superman and some specialist tools and flexible wrist joints. Third one can be done on your own with no specialist tools but is a big undertaking. I have done this and here is my thread on how it went. Here is a thread with some more detail.
