whitelightning
Hi, Does anyone know or have experienced coil pack issues with the 2.0T engines? I bought my 2006 2.0T from an Audi main dealer 10 days ago under the approved used car scheme. Coil pack 1 failed on Friday and coil pack 4 failed last night (Saturday). Coil pack 4 failed so badly it's melted and not sure what other damage has been caused. The car doesn't start after last night's incident. Phoned Audi to take the car back and thoroughly inspect it. Being a Sunday there's limited amounts to what they can do. I know there were issues with the 1.8T and in some cases with the 2.0T in the US, with a recall. Should I be worried about the general health of the car and possibly give it back to the dealer (for refund or exchange), or is this coil pack problem normal and all should be ok after replacement/inspection. TIA.
shark_90
I would put my money on the dealer having the engine steam cleaned, which tends to cause this. One of my customers had exactly the same problem a few months ago. I would insist the dealer changes all the coil packs for you and leave it at that. The coil pack problems aren't as bad as they used to be but they do still do go from time to time.
ming
Similar problem with my 2.0T. First coil pack failed the day after collecting from dealer and second 7 days later. The latter also melted causing lots of smoke to billow from under the bonnet. On examination the stem of the coil pack was covered in scale, which the Audi Assist guy reckoned was caused by water ingress, probably due to power wash or steam clean at main dealer prior to handing over. A quick inspection of number 4 pack showed similar scaling. There are numerous posts across lots of forums of coil pack failures occurring within days of leaving main dealerships. You would think the main dealers would twig this and refrain from cosmetically tarting up the engine bay at the expense of failed coil packs. There's their reputation to consider, as well. But it seems they don't really care. Otherwise they would stop this brain-dead practice.
DanG
not too sure how often this happens when water isnt a factor. I have had 4 2.0T A4's (inc a B8 Avant) and never had an issue. in fact i think the engine quality is superb. they got driven hard too.

You've hit the nail on the head, I reckon. All of the coil pack failures I'm referring to occurred soon after uplift from Main Dealerships - mine included. In many cases within HOURS, far less days. Ingress of the volume of water to replicate steam clean or power wash just isn't possible in normal day to day use. Therefore, incidences are few and far between. It seems utterly ridiculous that the Main Dealer practice is allowed to continue.
