SonicMarmalade
All I want is to have a tomtom, or tomtom on my phone able to work within my A8 D2. Its completely impossible to get a signal on phone or any of a number of tomtom units I've tried, so I thought I would outwit it by putting a bluetooth GPS antenna in the boot, and using that for the phones receiver instead of the inbuilt one. But even that can't get a signal, with the antenna right at the back of the boot by the bumper, and the phone on the passenger seat, so that should have no signals obstructed by glass of any kind. Has anyone else solved this problem, as I don't want to pay loads for a factory retrofitted one, and would really like to keep using tomtoms. I bet the worlds secret services use A8's, as theres sod all chance of anyone listening to any communications.

SonicMarmalade
I think I might have sorted it. Just spent an hour experimenting with the bluetooth antenna and the inbuilt one on the phone, and trying locations all over the car. It turns out the phone has a small gap it can get a strong signal through, about 1cm in front of the upper air vent by the drivers side wing mirror. Figure11
The issue is the athermic glass in your windscreen. It blocks the GPS signal. I got around it by buying a re-radiating ariel. Like this one. Edited April 9, 2010 by Figure11

craigyb
It's not a double galzing issue, it's the glass coating as mentioned earlier. My D2 S8 was the same, I split the feed to sat nav and ran my speed camera detector from that.
IceBlue8
Do they not all have the same coating? I don't understand why some cars are OK and ohers are not

craigyb
No, there are two options for glass on the A8/S8, standard glass is option 4KC and the athermic is 4KV, well that's what they are on the D3. Just checked on the D2 as well, 4KC and 4KV are also options. Edited April 12, 2010 by craigyb
