[Audi A3/S3] Changing Xenon Bulb on 8L S3?

Right whats the crack with this then?

My right side has been dimmer than the left for a while now, so i've checked up on a couple of forums to get this sorted and Iam getting contradicting solutions.

Firstly Ive read that you are able to self change the bulbs, removing the battery will give you access to the right side cluster. The cost of this is a replacement bulb approx £30.

Then i've also read that the whole unit needs to be replaced as self changing is not possible. Cost of this circa £400!!

Has anybody been able to change the bulb?

Changed a factory Xenon bulb on my S8 fairly easily (5 mins). Replacing the whole unit sounds like the kind of stuff Audi tell you. E.g I rang up a few weeks ago to get a auto dimming mirror stuck onto my windscreen. Autoglass couldn't do it, and they told me its not possible and that I needed a new windscreen as it comes attached. Eventually did it myself with a £2 suction thingi from Maplins.

The bulbs are replaceable, however they are a long bulb so access is an issue.

The battery side is easiest by removing the battery.

The other side, i fail to see a way of removing the bulb without out taking the headlight out, and that means bumper off. (been there when i needed to refit a blown IC hose)

Off the top of my head i cannot remember which the S3 uses. Its been 3 years since I was in the automotive industry. Daft really as i used to handle 1000's of the things over a 10 year period.

In an emergency i would fit one. But preferably fit both, as there is likely to be a colour difference with age.

Right.. have the new bulbs but not too sure how to fit.

I've managed to get into the headlight cluster from the back and twist the connection off. Now there looks to be a black holder in place which i dont want to force out the wrong way, i'm told to twist to release the bulb, but which way?
