cruiser647
On start up, a loud whinning sound is heard. Last for about as long as the 'secondary air pump' is on (so in this weather, not long). Then it's gone. Turbos seem fine. Would a semi clogged fuel filter cause this? How easy is it to change a fuel filter?
SAiLO
I got that whining sound on the startup as well. If I am standing behind the car I can hear it from the exhaust pipes. The turbo is on it's way out though. In A3 8P it's an easy job, just remove the screws from the fuel filter housing, take the old filter out, fit the new one in properly and screw back on. Don't know which audi you drive?

SAiLO
Just got my A3 back from the garage. Turbo replaced, turbo oil supply pipe replaced. The whine is gone, car feels like brand new! Happy days! There was also a 2mm thick carbon buildup in the manifold pipe.
cruiser647
The whining on mine sounds electric, as when it goes, it sort of sounds like a winding down sound (power off type thing). Yet the turbos 'feel' fine when in full flow. I've spayed some carb cleaner in through the turbo pipes to clear up some of the crap I know will be building up. Strangely enough, no whine today on mine! Hmm.
