A4 B8 Steering Shudder/Vibration when parking

Has anyone else heard of or got this issue?, it is a quite noticeable high pitched vibration and noise when going lock to lock at very low speeds e.g. parking in a tight space- I know all power steering vibrates but this is very noticeable and very very harsh at about mid point...bit like the vibration from a PS3 controller!

My local dealer (who are shocking) failed to diagnose last week (they 'roadtested' it - despite having told them on a normal drive it is fine), giving the 'its working to spec' fob off line, wasnt there to collect the car myself.

June 2008 2.0tdi with the variable power steering rack.

Other than that its been fine, barring the occassional park brake glitch sticking on or off (now re-flashed) and suspect petrol flap opening over winter.

Mine's fine so it can't be the same on all.

When I have something like this I just ask for 5 mins of the tech's time and drive and show him. The tech's aren't sales and hence I've found have nothing to earn from pretending it's ok. In fact it seems weird a dealer would as they earn money from Audi for doing warranty work.

Ask for a comparison test drive in one of their other A4's and demonstrate that it's not the same.

Don't give in. Maybe take it to another dealer?

going back in person next weekend rather than the collection and delivery option. It bugs me when they claim its the same as another A4 theyve tried back to back so is working to spec - the end, so much for making sure the customer is happy!!

Lesson learnt - Avoid Huddersfield Audi Service Dept - Sytner, they are shite - fur coat and no knickers - you get better customer service from a ford garage. Leeds (same group) are very good in my experience but further to travel for me - come the next service I will be going to Leeds.

I work for a company with a huge fleet and this poor opinion is shared by others based on personal experience.

I will be sure to report back on Huddersfield Audi.

Well, took the car to dealer in person yesterday - spoke to a couple of audi owners in the waiting area, one guy had arrived at 8.30 for some front brake pads fitting to a TT - and was only just leaving dealership at 10:40. A women in an A5 was miffed because some new wipers had been put on her car and the wipers were smearing worse than ever. Another guy who had arrived at 8:30 was expecting to get lunch !!!

Anyway, service person tells me that technician had been unable to replicate issue in the car park but the technician had experienced the steering judder issue lock to lock in the workshop.

The issue was a 'servo' (I paid extra in 08 for servotronic steering), and that the technician was to send a technical report into audi and that the dealer would be in touch if there was any response. The statement was this judder is normal for my model of A4 with servo steering (but to me this seems at odds with sending a technical report in).

'Can you let me know what Audi say', 'yes we'll be in touch if they come back with anything'. Arrghhhh!! Great stuff - a case of dont hold your breath.

Any thoughts on my next course of action as I'm far from convinced this judder is 'normal' and I should accept it as such - I've been driving A4s as my main car since 2004. If it is normal then it is a design fault. Should I go direct to Audi?

Any feedback or views on whether anyone else with the servo steering has got this problem appreciated.

Only to repeat my previous post. Pop to another dealer and get a test drive....maybe an idea not to go in your A4 ;)

An idea scotty but not sure I can face dealing with car salespeople and posing as a would-be purchaser!! As I see it I could insist the local dealer give me another a4 to try at the dealership - or just get straight onto Audi head office, or I could contact my lease company.

I have the exact same issue with my 06 2.0 TDI Multi Avant. Never found a cure, but 80k miles later, same vibration/noise when parking. Seems to of had no ill effect. Not ideal I agree, but no problems as a result. Grin and bare...

I call it an Audi undocumented feature :-)

hi all . i am not sure about your model but when i had this problem on an a4 b6 2004 it turned out to be the clutch pulley on the alternater. on the b6 the auxilary belt runs the alternater the aircon and the power steering pump when you use your steering at slow speed ie parking it puts an extra load on the auxilary belt which causes the clutch pulley to vibrate if there is any wear in it . i replaced mine and when i took the old one off there was loads of play in the bearing new one put on vibration gone. its worth a look

I have to say reading sbt post it seems more likely to be pulley than hose, though I stand to be corrected if hose does the job.

I have the very same problem on my 4 year old B7 from new so would be very interested in the outcome. Does anyone know if there was a recall for this problem? Me thinking if I could still get it fixed at no cost.

There was a 'recall' but not really on the B7 of specific build number/age reference noise from the power steering on left lock - a groaning. They are ZF power steering coponents and they were initially sorted by replacing the pipe and hoses a la B8. the problem did not go away and the rack and pump furniture were then changed. If you have not complained about it already the chances of a replacement FoC are virtually nil. The problem is simply one of noise and as it is occasional, at parking speed it is not really a 'problem' but is annoying
