The 3.2 is for boys, anything smaller and you could be labelled a gay hairdresser.

Following the mantra of power is everything, why go for a smaller engine ?

What sort of budget have you got and do you buy private or dealer only.

i'll buy private or independent, up to about 10k poss more for the right car, looked at the boxster, Z4, s2000 - anything reliable and quick, only going to be used occasionally

As an owner of the Bruno version of the Boxster I think you should give them both a drive both before making your mind up, neither is exceptionally quick but the handling of any of the 987 Boxsters is superb. I test drove a Z4M and both Boxsters before picking mine and the Z4M was the quickest but just didn’t handle the way the Boxster did. If I had the extra cash of course I would have got the S but I didn’t at the time and still enjoy the car today. +++

The 986 boxster is not without issues, they can have rear main oil seal issues which will cost a couple of grand to sort (as per the 996 911). The 986 also has half the service interval of the 987, plastic rear screen as opposed to glass (pre 2003 models) so you'll need to master the "boxster chop" if you don't want your rear plastic screen to crack.

All in all, I'd be looking for a 987 model, much more modern styling as well as the fact the engines actually have a bit of shove. If you do go for a 986 make sure it's an S otherwise a 987 will fit the bill.
