But, why do all manufacturers seem to make cars with the same size engines? Ie alot of 1.6, 2.0, 3.2's Why aren't there many 1.7's or 3.1's? There must be a engineering reason other than the emissions or tax reasons that I keep coming up with. Go on chaps, enlighten me. I need enlightened. But surely each governments taxation system is different enough not to influence an entire industries business model. Is it easier to manufacture certain size blocks? DanG Posted January 2, 2011 Report Share Posted January 2, 2011 I remember when I was living in the US, BMW had the 323i, 325i and 330i which were all 3.0 Litre engines. Also, talking of non 'normal' engine sizes, I had a 2.3 (Golf V5) back in the day, and 2.7 litre Porsche 911.... Finally, i have recently seen the new X5 40d - which is still a 3.0 litre engine, but which makes 300hp - fantastic technology. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's badged as an X5 xDrive50i M Sport - so you'd think 5.0 litre. In actual fact it's 4395cc (stills puts out 408bhp and 600Nm of torque mind - and we actually have a delivery date now...1st March 2011. They've made more cock-ups on this than they did on my cancelled car many years ago, but at least they've managed to catch these before it was too late). So that's a 400cc smaller engine than my 6, but a whopping 75 bhp more (and she keeping reminding me that the 0-62mph of 5.5s is 'quite a bit' quicker than my 6.1s ).
