garcon magnifique
Sounds like you did your homework Garcon, checked out the non-premium sector, weighed up the options, test drove lots, considered our thoughts and views and bought the Subaru! Honestly, I did all that bar the test drives ... every time I tell myelf I should make more effort to go out and actually drive the alternatives, and every time for various reasons (note the Vauxhall experience above) I end up not doing, or not doing enough. Fair enough! When's delivery time? Already got it. Picked it up Friday morning. '60' plate ex-demo. First tank average, so far (about 170 miles) - 51mpg. garcon magnifique
It's not bad for a fecking big 4wd tank. Granted that was mostly rural A roads, but it bodes well for a 45mpg + average. I shall save about £1500 a year in fuel alone!
CarMad
I shall save about £1500 a year in fuel alone! But how do you value the smiles per mile from your old car? I'm only saying this as I think I'm going to have to get something realistic myself soon, I may even look at a Ford S-Max, oh the joys of becoming a Dad. garcon magnifique
It was an equation that started very much in favour of the smiles per mile, but has been sliding for a while. I just haven't used the performance of late, and the negatives like big wear and tear bills and attractiveness to thieves started to take over. There will be times when I miss that performance I know, but 95% + I'll be enjoying the comfort, the toys and the mpg much more.
DHA
I know where you are coming from, my shortlived 135 was probably going to be my last performance car and I would go for luxobarge after. Coasting along is quite nice, but I am having something reasonably fun for another couple of years. Booster
Can we have some pics please garçon? Carmad, S max is a surprisingly pleasant drive and a good choice for a family wagon! TSN'ers in 'complimenting Fords shocker', all it needs now is for me to like a VW and our world has flipped upside down! S Max is a good drive, it's basically the same as my Galaxy, only a bit smaller, I'm on 92k now and touch wood, no problems since the DMF and part of the loom were replaced under warranty when I first got it. There are areas that undoubtedly could be improved on, my main bugbear being the rear bulb holders that don't make very good contact with the bulbs, resulting in it looking like you have a bulb out every now and again, a quick tap of the lense and it comes on again, but I'm hoping to sort this either with some sort of LED bulbs with bigger contacts than the 501 wedge bulbs puny bit of wire contact, or some conductive lubricant (rc switchlube?), other than that I'm really happy with it, and its amazingly practical. Weighing 2 tonnes and only having a 1.8 tdci 125bhp, it's not going to win any races, but it's surprisingly chuckable, and very very comfortable on it's big bouncy high sidewalled 16" steels, when I put the 18's on it, it absolutely transforms the handling and feedback, and would put many other 'sporty' marques to shame. Flynn
Am I the only one that plans to be yobbing it up in an Impreza until death do us part? I just don't see why being have to get all old and boring. It would be so funny to see a 70 year old with the tunes pumping and the dump valve dumping up and down a dual carriageway lol. NewNiceMrMe
Joking aside about brand blinkers, I can see the sense in this from what Garcon has said and, going by the car in the link above, that's a very good looking car indeed. I love the colour. If you've got a brand you're happy with and that has never let you down, especially if that is combined with good dealer relations, then I don't think anyone would want to move to another brand with the risks that come with it. 51mpg certainly isn't to be sniffed at and I like my toys too so I can relate to that. I can also relate to another point, albeit differently. I don't think/worry about the theft aspect on a car but I did get tired of everyone thinking you wanted a race (under 25's that is) when I had the M3's. It got very tiresome, especially when I had the family in the car with me. There's something nicely anonymous about 'normal' cars and I think you end up being a lot less stressed on the road. I'm sure there'll be times when, as you say, you'll wish you had the power of the STi - but it sounds to me like you've made the change and decision with very few regrets at all and had probably come to the end of the STi road. The thing is, at least you travelled that road and experienced the delights of it. I really do like that colour by the way. Suits the Subaru. NeilB
TSN'ers in 'complimenting Fords shocker', all it needs now is for me to like a VW and our world has flipped upside down! Another one to add to that list is me. I'm contemplating a Mondeo Titanium X TDCI due to a) The Golf boring the hell out of me b) possible change of job and long distance commuting and c) there is a lot of car for the money when you look at a nearly new one. I've considered a fair few brands, even considered going back to Alfa a 159, but the Mondeo seems to offer a lot that others don't.
Tipex
here is a lot of car for the money when you look at a nearly new one. If your looking at Fords, I would strongly recommend not buying new, and buying a 'Ford Direct' car. They will be nearly new, low mileage, usually well specced, and you get a better warranty. Standard new Ford warranty is 1 year Ford, and one year dealer (might be 2 year dealer now, not sure) or 60k, whichever is sooner, so things like trim not being covered, and 'wear and tear' start to rear there head after the first year. The Ford direct warranty is 2 years all components, trim etc etc, basically everything, unlimited mileage, which is great if you do high miles. My Galaxy was basically new when I bought it, little more than delivery miles, and I paid 13k for it, it's list price would have been 24k, it's still worth 11.5k with 92k on the clock as a trade in! cruiser647
Superb colour!!! However, I think it needs 2 exhaust pipes. Either one each side or a twin exit job. Other than that - I cannot fault the look and interior! The bod opposite my garage has the white version. White is not a good look for it.

neilybealy
Hi all I've recently gone from a mk5 golf gti to a year old insignia Sri 2.0 cdti due to the cost of running the golf for work (1k miles each month just getting to work an back and upto 500 miles business) I did test drive a year old mondeo titanium with all the toys and before the test I thought I would prefer the ford but I actually found it to be flimsy in comparison to my golf and the insignia After 2 weeks ownership the insignia is more comfortable but i do miss the power and fun factor of the golf Neil
NeilB
Thanks Tipex, I'll bear that in mind about Ford Direct cars, there certainly a few on Autotrader at the mo that look appealing and suit the spec I want i.e Xenon lights. Perhaps the reviews of the old Vectra didn't help my initial views of it. Shall have to see if I can get a test drive in one when I start looking properly in a coming months. theduisbergkid
I'm not surprised you've gone for the Subaru, Garcon, I like the colour but it's one ugly bastard in my opinion ! Subaru are one of those brands everyone seems to like and I can certainly see the appeal in a motor like that.
